5 pension and Inheritance Tax myths, debunked.

👉 Myth: pensions always sit outside Inheritance Tax. Not from 6 April 2027, when most unused pension funds start counting towards your estate.

👉 Myth: it only hits the very wealthy. Around 1 in 20 estates pay it today, and frozen thresholds mean more families will.

👉 Myth: my spouse will be taxed. Anything you leave a spouse or civil partner is free of Inheritance Tax.

👉 Myth: my will decides who gets my pension. It doesn’t. Your expression of wish form does.

👉 Myth: gifts leave your estate straight away. Many stay in it for seven years.

‼️ Your pension is about to count towards Inheritance Tax. Here’s what’s changing.

👉 Pensions join your estate in 2027.
Right now most pensions sit outside your estate for Inheritance Tax. From 6 April 2027, most unused pension funds will be counted in.

👉 The thresholds are frozen.
You can pass on £325,000 tax free, plus £175,000 if your main home goes to your children. Both are frozen until 2031, so more estates get caught every year.

👉 It could cost thousands.
Inheritance Tax is charged at 40% above the thresholds. The government expects 38,500 estates to pay more, by around £34,000 on average.

👉 You still have time.
Spending, gifting, buying an annuity or changing who inherits your pension can all reduce a future bill. The right option depends on your plans.
