Pension planning, tax planning and strategy are all valuable aspects of a financial plan.

What every higher-rate or additional-rate taxpayer needs to know about pension contributions.

Pension contributions can be a powerful planning tool for higher earners.

Not just for retirement, but for improving tax efficiency too.

Depending on your circumstances, they may help you:
- Reduce taxable income
- Make better use of allowances
- Build long-term financial security

But understanding how everything works together is not always straightforward.

That’s where an IFA can help, bringing clarity to your options and helping you make informed financial decisions.

As the saying goes there are two certainties in life - death and taxes.
With good financial planning we can work on ways to reduce the amount of tax you pay and although we can’t forecast when we will die we can make sure that your loved ones are financially secure.

Is there a simple way to reduce your income tax bill?
- Not quite.

But there are a range of allowances and reliefs available, many of which are often overlooked.

A good starting point is:
- Pensions
- ISAs

Used properly, they can make a real difference.

The difficulty is not finding options.

It’s understanding how they apply to your situation.

That’s why many people turn to an IFA, to help bring everything together and avoid missing opportunities.

Are you concerned about how much tax you’re paying?
As part of a strategic financial plan I always consider the tax you pay and ways to reduce and mitigate. If you’d like to discuss more send me a DM and we can book in an initial chat

The 60% tax trap. What is it? And how can you avoid it?

Earning over £100,000 can come with an unexpected catch.

Between £100,000 and £125,140:
- You pay higher-rate tax
- You begin to lose your Personal Allowance

Which means you may keep far less of each extra pound than expected.

In many cases, there are ways to reduce the impact.

But the key is understanding what applies to your situation.

That’s where a Talis IFA can help, guiding you through your options and helping you make informed decisions.

How much is enough for retirement? Talis IFA explains why it’s not all about the numbers

It’s a question many people quietly wonder about.

Is there a single answer?
Not really.

The amount you need depends on the life you want to live.

What does that include?
- Your home
- Your lifestyle
- Your plans for family or travel
- When you want to retire

Two people with similar savings can have completely different retirements.

That is why planning is less about hitting a number and more about understanding what matters to you.

Your money and your life: how an IFA can help you make the most of both

Is your money working in a way that supports your life?

It’s something many people don’t stop to think about.

We often start with numbers
How much we have
How much we need

But it usually works better the other way round.

Start with your life
Then build the plan around it

How confident do you feel about retirement?

It’s one of those questions people often put off.

Not because anything is wrong, but because it’s not always clear where to start.

In reality, confidence usually comes from understanding your position, not guessing.

And once things are clearer, decisions feel a lot easier.

Five things you might not know about money

Feel like you should be doing more?
You’re not alone.

Is money all about income?
Not really. Small habits can make a big difference over time.

Do you need to have everything figured out?
No. Starting somewhere is what matters most.

Often, confidence comes from clarity, not complexity.

There are two thought processes when looking at retirement income.
1. You need more than you do
2. You need less than you do

Which are you?

If you don’t want to guess but would like to have a well thought out plan and strategy get in touch for an initial conversation

If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re saving enough for retirement, you’re not alone.

It’s a question many people think about, but it can be difficult to answer.

A helpful starting point is to consider:
- Where your finances are now
- How long you have until retirement
- When you would like to stop working
- The lifestyle you want to enjoy

For example, retiring earlier often means your savings need to last longer.

There are general benchmarks available, but they are only a guide. What matters most is how they apply to your own circumstances.

Understanding where you stand today can help you feel more confident about tomorrow.

Many people hesitate to seek advice because they worry about being judged for not knowing enough.

But financial advice should feel supportive, not intimidating.

A calm conversation can bring clarity, perspective and reassurance, especially when investment markets or life events feel uncertain.

What a week. Back to work last week and it was very busy. New client meeting, strategy meetings, annual reviews as well as prep for this coming week and networking. Finished off the week with an afternoon tea at St James Hotel in Nottingham - delicious. An evening at the opera - Madam Butterfly at the Winding Wheel in Chesterfield. Followed up by a 10 mile walk in the Peak District - paying for it today. Great start to this week with a lovely meal with my daughter and very thoughtful gifts and beautiful words in the card for Mother’s Day.
What is your week ahead like?
