Paphos Archaeological Park – UNESCO-listed Roman mosaics, among the best-preserved in the Mediterranean

Aphrodite’s Rock (Petra tou Romiou) – the sea stack where Greek mythology says she rose from the waves

Paphos Harbour & Castle – medieval fort right on the waterfront, good for an evening walk

Tombs of the Kings – underground rock-cut tombs dating back over 2,000 years

Coral Bay – the closest proper sandy beach if you want to top up on sun

Living in Spain, Portugal or France sorts your healthcare at home… It doesn’t follow you everywhere else ✈️🙃

💷 The real cost of getting it wrong. Repatriation back home from outside Europe can run into tens of thousands of pounds or euros, and in many countries, treatment has to be paid upfront before you’re even allowed to leave.

EES is fully up and running across Spain’s borders. If you’re a TIE holder, here’s what it actually means for you, and what to tell anyone visiting…

🟢 You’re exempt. EES is built for short-stay visitors, not residents.

🚪 Skip the e-gates. They can only read your passport, not your TIE, so using one risks logging you as a short-stay visitor, with a real chance of being flagged as an overstayer.

📋 Head for the manned resident desk instead. Show your passport and TIE together.

📊 You’re not the only one confused. A June 2026 survey found 42% of TIE holders believed their card would let them use the e-gates. Some airports are rolling out gates that can read a TIE, but it’s inconsistent, so the manned desk stays the safer bet for now.

📄 Still on the green certificate? It’s generally accepted when returning to Spain, but it isn’t biometric and isn’t guaranteed to trigger the exemption. Worth swapping it for a TIE when you can.

✈️ Visiting family or friends on UK passports? They ARE processed under EES, fingerprints and a facial scan on their first crossing.

The 90/180 day rule: how long you can actually spend in Europe without a visa, and it still catches out people who’ve lived here for years.

📅 The basic rule: UK passport holders can spend up to 90 days in the Schengen Area within any rolling 180 day period, without a visa.

🗺️ It’s not per country. A month in Spain, three weeks in France and a fortnight in Italy all draw from the same 90 days.

🔍 It’s tracked automatically now. Since EES went fully live in April 2026, entries and exits are recorded biometrically, no more relying on passport stamps or guesswork.

⚠️ Overstaying has real consequences: fines, entry bans of one to five years, deportation, and complications for future visa applications.

🏡 Have a TIE? This is the bit people miss. Your Spanish residency exempts you from the 90/180 rule, but only in Spain. Travel to France, Italy or Portugal as a British passport holder and the same 90 day clock applies to you there too.

Rules can shift and individual circumstances vary, so always double check your specific situation against official guidance before you travel.
