When was the last time you properly looked at your pensions?

If you've got a few different pensions and aren't really sure what's in them, it might be worth getting them looked at.

If you're unsure what you should be doing with your pensions, message me and let's have a chat.

A client came to me with a few workplace pensions and one main question:

"Will I have enough to retire at 60?"

She'd changed jobs over the years and ended up with several different pensions. She wasn't really sure what was in each one, how they were invested or what charges she was paying.

So the first thing I did was review each pension, including the investments, charges and what each pension could offer.

We then decided to amalgamate them into one pension, making things easier to manage and allowing us to use a fund that matched her attitude to risk and investment term.

This also meant she could benefit from lower fund costs and greater growth potential.

I dealt with the providers and the transfers after our first meeting, so she didn't have to.

I'll continue to review things with her each year and make changes where needed, with the aim of keeping her on track for the retirement and lifestyle she wants.

She was delighted with the outcome and said she was now happier knowing her pension was going to help make retirement more enjoyable.

For me, it's about understanding what you've got, where you want to be, and then working out how to get there.

A nice meeting last week with a family discussing intergenerational wealth planning.

I've already looked after the daughter and her husband, and this time I was meeting with her mum, who's already retired.

We had a good chat about her investments, what she wants to do with them and how she can help her children and grandchildren. We also went through their own arrangements and spoke about Junior ISAs and Junior Pensions for the grandchildren, which I'll be setting up.

It's nice being able to sit down with the whole family and look at the bigger picture, not just what's happening with one person's finances.

Another good meeting and another great family relationship built 👍🏻

Many people have changed jobs and ended up with a number of pensions without really knowing what is in them, how they have been invested or what charges they are paying.

When I meet with potential clients, we usually sit down for a coffee and have a chat about their circumstances and what they're looking to achieve.

I'll explain the options available to you, and you can take your time and make a decision when you're ready.

Cash feels safe, but keeping too much of it has a cost too.

Many people are not aware of the effect that inflation is having on their money.

The Financial Times reported that more than a million bank accounts with over £50,000 are earning no interest. In total, 1.04 million accounts held over £50,000, with £116 billion sitting across those accounts. The average balance was a £111,537.

It's a great deal of money being held in cash rather than earning interest for its owners, and I frequently come across this situation with my clients, since people regard cash as the safest option.

Inflation can slowly reduce what that money is actually worth over time.

That doesn't mean you should invest all your money, just that you should know why you need the money and ensure you've got the right balance.
