Any donations welcome and much appreciated for Aaron who will be completing this challenge.

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page. In the last 50 years, Cancer Research UK’s work has helped double cancer survival in the UK. But we need to go further, faster.
Cancer doesn’t have an age preference and perfectly healthy people are diagnosed with Cancer. Anything that anyone can spare all helps. Thank you in advance.

💼 Self-employed? Your income is your business’s biggest asset

If you're self-employed, what happens when you can't work?

Unlike employees, you don't receive Statutory Sick Pay. That means if illness or injury keeps you away from work, your income could stop, but your financial commitments won't.

🏠 Mortgage or rent
💡 Household bills
🚐 Vehicle and business costs
🛒 Everyday living expenses
👨‍👩‍👧 Family commitments

For employees, eligible workers can receive up to £123.25 a week in Statutory Sick Pay from April 2026.

For the self-employed?
£0 SSP.

That's why Income Protection can be particularly valuable for self-employed clients.

💷 It can provide a regular monthly income if illness or injury means you're unable to work, helping you continue to meet your financial commitments while you recover.

You are the engine behind your business. If you can't work, what protects your income?

🩺 Critical Illness Cover vs Income Protection: What's the Difference?

They both provide financial support when illness affects your life, but they protect you in different ways.

🩺 Critical Illness Cover
If you're diagnosed with a covered serious illness, it can provide a lump sum to use as you choose.

💷 You could use it to:
• Pay off or reduce your mortgage
• Cover household bills
• Make changes to your home
• Take time away from work
• Help with recovery costs

💼 Income Protection
If illness or injury means you're unable to work, Income Protection can provide a regular monthly income to help you maintain your finances while you recover.

💷 It can help with:
• Mortgage or rent
• Household bills
• Everyday living costs
• Family commitments

Think of it this way:
🩺 Critical Illness Cover = A lump sum following a covered diagnosis.
💼 Income Protection = An income if you're unable to work due to sickness.

They aren't the same cover, and depending on your circumstances, having both could provide broader financial protection.

🏡 Good news for fixed-term contract workers!

One of the UK’s largest mortgage lenders has changed the way it assesses certain applicants on fixed-term employment contracts 🙌

If you’re currently working on a fixed-term contract and fall into one of the following categories, you can now be assessed under the lender’s standard employment criteria:
👩‍⚕️ Medical doctors
👨‍🏫 Teachers (excluding supply teachers and teaching assistants)
🌍 UAE residents with a total contract duration of 3+ years

This could make getting a mortgage more straightforward for people who previously faced additional criteria because of their employment contract.

💬 On a fixed-term contract and wondering what your mortgage options look like?

Drop us a message and we can take a look at your circumstances and the lenders that may be available to you.

🤔 How Much Protection Cover Do I Need?

It's one of the most common questions we hear, and the honest answer is...

It depends on you.

Everyone's circumstances are different, but when thinking about protection, ask yourself:
🏡 If you weren't here tomorrow, could your family afford to stay in their home?
💷 If you couldn't work because of illness or injury, how would you pay your monthly bills?
🩺 If you were diagnosed with a serious illness, would you have enough money to focus on your recovery without financial worry?

The right amount of protection should reflect your lifestyle, financial commitments and the people who rely on you.

Whether it's Life Cover, Critical Illness Cover or Income Protection, having the right cover in place can provide valuable financial security when it's needed most.

📞 Not sure if you have enough cover? Get in touch today for a protection review. We'll help you understand your options and make sure your cover is right for your needs.

🏡 Buying a home? Don't forget these costs...

Saving for your deposit is a huge milestone, but it's only one part of the budget when buying your home.

Before you get the keys, it's worth planning for a few other costs too, including:
✔️ Solicitor fees
✔️ Building Survey costs
✔️ Mortgage broker fees
✔️ Mortgage lender and valuation fees (where applicable)
✔️ Stamp Duty (if payable)
✔️ Buildings & Contents insurance
✔️ Removal costs
✔️ Furniture, decorating and those little extras that soon add up

Knowing what to expect from the start can make your home-buying journey much less stressful, and as a mortgage broker, I'm here to help you understand the full cost of buying a home, not just the mortgage, so you can budget with confidence from day one.

📩 Thinking about buying your first home or moving house? Get in touch and let's make sure you're fully prepared.

🏗️ Protect your income – and your business

Being self-employed means you're in control of your business...
But it also means your business relies on you. 💼

If illness or injury stopped you from working, your income could reduce or stop altogether. But many of your fixed business costs would still need to be paid. 📋

These could include:
• 🚐 Van or vehicle lease payments
• 🏢 Rent for your business premises
• 🛠️ Equipment or machinery hire
• 🛡️ Business insurance
• 💡 Utility bills
• 💳 Loan or finance repayments
• 📞 Phone, broadband and other essential business expenses

These are known as fixed costs because they continue whether you're working or not.

✅ Income Protection can provide a regular monthly income if you're unable to work due to illness or injury. Even better, if you're self-employed, eligible fixed business costs may also be taken into account when calculating how much cover you can have, helping you protect more than just your income.

That means you could have greater financial support to help keep both your household and your business running while you focus on your recovery. ❤️‍🩹

📞 If you're self-employed and would like to find out how Income Protection could help protect both you and your fixed costs, get in touch on 01484 817224.
