The question I get most when I explain an Individual Pension Plan to a business owner: "Wait, I can catch up?"
Often, yes. An IPP can recognize the years you've already paid yourself a salary, sometimes back to the day you incorporated. Part of that is funded by moving over existing RRSP assets, and part by new corporate contributions the company deducts.
It isn't for everyone. There are setup and actuarial costs, the money is locked in, and it generally only makes sense if you're over 40 and on a T4 salary. For the right owner it is one of the better tools available. For the wrong one it's overkill.
Tomorrow night I'm hosting a live session on it with Fraser Lang, SVP at GBL Inc., who has spent his career on these plans. We'll cover how it works, what it costs, and how to tell which side of that line you're on.
