Important AML/CTF Changes From 1 July 2026: What Clients Need to Know

New Australian anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing (AML/CTF) reforms will take effect from 1 July 2026, bringing accounting firms into the AML/CTF regime for the first time.

As part of these changes, accounting firms will be required to verify client identities, conduct ongoing due diligence, and meet new reporting obligations under Australian law.

What this means for clients:
• Identity verification will be required before appointments
• Additional information may be requested for companies and trusts
• Enhanced compliance and record-keeping processes will apply
• Appointment times may be extended to accommodate these requirements

These reforms are designed to strengthen Australia's financial system and help prevent financial crime.
