Controversial question:

If parents contribute to a deposit, how much say should they get in the property?

My answer?

It depends on what everybody has actually agreed to.

Because:

A genuine gift.

A repayable loan.

A family guarantee.

And an arrangement involving ownership interests...

can raise very different questions.

And that's before we get to the emotional side.

“We gave you money, so we assumed you'd buy near us.”

Oh.

Was that discussed?

Or did we all just silently agree to completely different arrangements?

I have something against blind bank loyalty.

There is a difference.

If you've had the same home loan for years, it may be worth understanding:

What you're currently paying.

Which features you use.

What costs apply.

Whether your circumstances have changed.

Whether there are options worth investigating.

And whether changing anything would actually make sense.

Maybe your current arrangement is still appropriate.

Fantastic.

But let's arrive at that conclusion because we've considered the relevant information.
