Today I had the opportunity to attend the National Press Club with the Mortgage & Finance Association of Australia (MFAA) to hear ACT Senator David Pocock discuss:

“What could we build with our natural wealth if we thought and planned for the long term?”

A fantastic discussion about Australia’s long-term economic future and how the decisions we make today shape opportunities for future generations.

It was also great to hear directly from an independent Senator representing the ACT and advocating for our local community.

As someone working in finance, I always appreciate the opportunity to hear different perspectives on the economic and policy decisions shaping our future.

Things first home buyers think will ruin their home loan application… but usually don't.

1. You splurge takeaway or you’ve just been on a big holiday
You’re allowed to enjoy your money. We’re looking at your overall financial position and spending habits - not judging you for a holiday or Friday-night Uber Eats.

2. Your savings aren’t all sitting neatly in one account
Especially when there are two of you applying. Your savings might be spread across different accounts or held separately - that’s completely normal. We can work through where everything is and how it forms part of your overall deposit.

3. You’ve been declined by a lender before
A previous decline doesn’t automatically mean you can’t get a home loan. What matters is why it was declined and what your position looks like now.

4. You don’t have a 20% deposit
A 20% deposit isn’t always required. Depending on your circumstances, lender and eligibility for available schemes, you may be able to purchase with considerably less.

5. You still have loans, liabilities or a HECS/HELP debt
Having existing debts doesn’t automatically rule you out. They do need to be factored into your borrowing capacity, but you don’t necessarily need to pay everything off before you can buy a home.

All I want for Christmas is… a place to call my own.

For some, this Christmas might be their very first in a home they’ve purchased.

Meet Leonie

With 19 years in the finance industry, Leonie brings a wealth of experience to APC Home Loans. Starting her career as a bank teller in 2007, she worked her way up to managing multiple bank branches in Melbourne before moving to Canberra and becoming an accredited mortgage broker in 2019.

Leonie loves helping families make their next move - whether it’s for more space, better schools, a stronger sense of community or simply a lifestyle change. And having moved 13 times herself, she knows firsthand just how much goes into finding somewhere that truly feels like home.

Now based in Bungendore with her family, Leonie services Bungendore and the greater Canberra region.

Outside of work, she’s a mum of three, an active school and P&C volunteer, loves running, sewing and getting outdoors – and will happily admit she’s that screaming mum on the sporting sidelines.
