1-1. New Zealand by 33-16 at Ellis Park, South Africa by 33-26 in Cape Town. Saturday decides it.

The winner goes to Baltimore for the fourth Test 2-1 up and cannot lose the series. The loser is playing for a share.

Between the Tests, Jim Hamilton sat down with Dan Carter and Richie McCaw at our Rugby Centurions evening in Cape Town - 260 Test caps between them.

Carter had called Cape Town before it happened: a touring All Black side, good press, warm welcome, and no back-to-back Test win in South Africa in 30 years. The most dangerous week a team can have.

McCaw on reaching 100 Tests: talent takes you to a point, and then it is the discipline to repeat the same preparation to the same standard, every week, for a decade. Investing rewards the same behaviour.

Where we see opportunity over the next two to three years, and why: that was the substance of Jacques Conradie's session with financial advisers from Sanlam Personal Portfolio Namibia in Cape Town last week.

Jacques set out the investment process behind our current fund positioning, how we size conviction, where we are willing to hold concentrated exposure, and the structures that keep the team aligned to the same outcomes as our investors.

For advisers assessing managers on behalf of clients, the process is the product.

Thank you to Sanlam Namibia for the invitation.

An Evening with the Rugby Centurions, at Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa on Thursday, brought together six of South Africa's centurions: Percy Montgomery, Victor Matfield , John Smit, Jean De Villiers, Bryan Habana and Willie Le Roux , joined by Richie McCaw and Dan Carter, who played 96 Tests together for the All Blacks. More than 900 Test caps between the eight of them, with Jim Hamilton asking what it actually takes to get from 1 to 100. Jim won 63 Test caps at lock for Scotland, toured as a British & Irish Lion, and hosts The Big Jim Show.

Drummers and a live band welcomed our guests, followed by a lovely dinner with Cape Town in the window. Then everyone moved downstairs to sit around the Atrium Bowl for two sessions of conversation that could happily have run all night.

The evening was held in aid of the charities supported by the Rugby Centurions. The on-stage conversations were filmed on the night and will air on SuperSport later this year.

To every client and centurion who joined us, thank you for spending the evening with us.

Today we launch Building Conviction, a podcast in which Jacques Conradie, our CEO and portfolio manager, speaks to the leaders of some of South Africa's most compelling businesses about how they built them.

Our first guest is Marthinus Visser, Group CEO of OUTsurance. Visser joined OUTsurance in 1998 when it was about 100 people in a single Centurion office. It is now a multinational insurer across South Africa, Australia and Ireland, worth more than R100 billion on the JSE. He walks through the decisions behind that journey: the early loss-ratio challenges, the origins of the OUTbonus, why the group chose Australia over Brazil for Youi in 2008, and why it exited New Zealand and walked away from OUTvest when the numbers did not work.

He closes with his Conviction Card: one high-conviction view for the decade ahead, which reframes how investors should read natural-catastrophe headlines.

Full episode below. New episodes every few weeks.

Our thanks to Marthinus Visser and the OUTsurance team.

Why should South African businesses invest in South African schools?

Because the skills gap starts long before the job market. Strong numeracy and literacy at school level are what build a workforce capable of driving productivity, innovation and stability and reducing unemployment.

Classrooms need more than goodwill. They need partners willing to invest time, tools and expertise. That's why Peregrine Capital launched the Maths

Competition in over 300 schools nationwide: building number confidence now is one of the most practical investments a business can make in the country's future.

AWS revenue growth has accelerated to 37%. Google Cloud to 82%. For businesses of that scale, numbers like these signal that the AI buildout is showing up in earnings, not just headlines.

This was one of the threads at our Peregrine Insider session in Johannesburg, where Portfolio Managers, David Fraser, Jacques Conradie and Justin Cousins walked through recent portfolio performance, the market dynamics currently driving their thinking, and the key themes informing our investment outlook, including how capital flows through the AI economy, from the businesses adopting it to the frontier labs, hyperscalers and semiconductor makers behind it.

Against a backdrop of evolving global conditions, the landscape continues to reward long term thinking and disciplined positioning.

Thank you to everyone who joined us.

Reverse driver. Frying pan. Putter off the tee. At hole 9 of the Allan Gray Industry Golf Day at Zimbali Lakes Resort, golfers spun the wheel and played their shot with whatever fate handed them. Some pulled off brilliant recoveries. Most did not. The laughs were evenly distributed.

We came on board as a collaborative partner for the day, and the KZN wind made us earn it, but the stand held, and so did we.

Thank you to Teaghan Price and Anne Holding for representing us, and to everyone who stopped by, took a swing, and shared a laugh with us. This industry is at its best when it gets together.

AI was once again the standout theme at our Quarterly Business Review.

Across our business units, the pattern is consistent: greater efficiency in how work gets done, stronger quality control, and closer collaboration across functions. Not experiments, established ways of working that continue to improve each quarter, to the benefit of our clients.

Thank you to everyone who contributed. We look forward to building on this momentum next quarter.

One meal, packed by hand, reaches a child who might otherwise have gone without. Multiply that across a room of volunteers and it becomes real, measurable change - the kind of practical action Madiba asked of all of us.

This Mandela Day, the Peregrine Capital team joined Rise Against Hunger Africa and corporates from across the country to pack nutritious meals for vulnerable communities. Thank you to every team member who gave their time, and to Rise Against Hunger Africa for turning 67 minutes into something lasting.

The work doesn't end on 18 July. To volunteer or partner with Rise Against Hunger Africa: https://africa.riseagainsthunger.org/volunteer-events/
