On Youth day, we share some practical moneywise tips for parents of kids and teens:
Model Healthy Financial Behaviour
• Normalise constructive money talk: Discuss financial choices, budgeting priorities, and trade-offs openly instead of treating money as a taboo topic.
• Practice delayed gratification: Demonstrate waiting for items by saying out loud, "We are saving up for this, so we will buy it next month."
• Differentiate needs versus wants: Categorise purchases explicitly during grocery shopping trips to show the difference between essentials and luxuries.
• Avoid emotional spending: Refrain from shopping as a reward or stress-relief mechanism when children are observing your habits.
• Involve them in planning: Let children assist in budgeting for family holidays or grocery trips to practice real-world financial decision-making.
Creating a safe environment for kids to learn about money-basics, budgeting and the importance of saving can be of great value for their future!
