From the Williamsport Sun-Gazette:
Extreme temperatures will persist across the region before a cold front ushers in cooler air and a chance for strong thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
To assist those without adequate means of escaping the brutal temperatures, several cooling centers are opening their doors to the public Tuesday and Wednesday.
Williamsport YMCA, 641 Walnut St., will be hosting a cooling center from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday in their community room, they posted on their page. Cold water, games and activities will also be offered, according to the post.
Trinity Episcopal Church, 844 W. Fourth St., will offer their air-conditioned Parish Hall to anyone needing shelter from the oppressive weather from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, according to a social media post.
The Salvation Army, 457 Market St., will open its doors from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, the organization said on their page.
River Valley Transit is also offering free rides to senior citizens, 65 years and older, on their air conditioned buses, Skip Cochran, marketing director for River Valley Transit said. This effectively turns the buses into mobile cooling centers. “Anybody 65-plus can ride for free from the state funded senior transit card program, and if you’re 60 to 64, STEP will actually give you free passes to ride as well through their Office of Aging,” he said.
Those without access to air conditioning or other means of staying safe during peak heating hours are urged to utilize public spaces such as libraries, stores or shopping centers to stay cool, the American Red Cross suggests.
