Thanks to Jason Brown at Prudential, I had the unique opportunity to attend "Kades-Margolis Day at the Nasdaq" a few weeks ago.

The day included great professional development sessions and incredible views of New York City from the 27th floor of the Nasdaq building at Times Square, and ended with us attending the Nasdaq's closing bell ceremony!
(congrats to SEI Investments Company on having the honor of ringing the closing bell that day!)

One of the highlights came during a break later in the day. We'd gone to an outdoor patio on the 30th floor for some sunshine and realized that we were eye-level with the New Year's Eve ball! Having only ever seen the ball on TV or by looking way up from Times Square, this was a very cool experience.

There was also a funny coincidence at the start of the day: one of our Nasdaq hosts was wearing the exact same sports coat as me. It's a unique jacket and both of us commented that we'd never seen anyone else wearing it before. What are the odds?

Enjoy these photos from the day!

Ready for day #2 at BLaST IU 17’s back-to-school in-service! They’re all wearing green “team” shirts, so I also went with the green fit 💚

Sometimes, the unexpected happens.

The last COLA (cost of living adjustment (read "raise")) for Pennsylvania's retired public school employees who are receiving a pension was given in 2002, and it applied only to those who'd retired prior to July 1, 2001.

Almost 2025 years later, those retirees are still living on the same income they were living on in 2002.

As of yesterday, however, they will be getting a raise (again, only applicable to those who retired prior to July 2001), thanks to the passage of Pennsylvania's 2026-27 state budget.

According to the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, the budget "provides for supplemental annuities, also known as cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs), for eligible beneficiaries of the Public School Employees’ Retirement System (PSERS) who retired prior to July 2, 2001. These COLAs would commence with the first monthly annuity payment after July 1, 2026, and would amount to increases of between 15 and 24.5 percent of the current annuities of eligible beneficiaries depending on the beneficiary’s year of retirement."

I biked 🚴‍♂️ a few miles to my soccer game last night and it was great: my muescles were warmed up and I got a little extra exercise, too.

But, I probably wouldn't choose a bike if I needed to get to the other side of the country.
✈️ If time were of the essence, I'd fly.
🚗 If I wanted to sight see along the way, I'd drive.

All 3 options could get me to the same destination, but at varying speeds and with different advantages and tradeoffs based on my needs and goals.

The same principle applies to saving and investing.

The goal isn't to do what everyone else is doing or to use what everyone else is using; it's to choose the right vehicle(s) for your financial journey based on who you are, where you're trying to get, and what matters most to you.

403(b)s, pensions, IRAs, brokerage accounts, emergency funds, college savings plans ...
Mutual funds, ETFs, annuities, stocks, bonds, insurance ...

All of these have a purpose. None are universally "best." They're simply different vehicles designed to help people reach their financial destinations.

The key is creating your unique financial roadmap, using available vehicles, to help you reach your goals (destinations) as effectively and efficiently as possible.

My job is to help you build and implement your financial roadmap. Let's talk!

On our way to the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts this past weekend, my family unexpectedly passed PSERS' headquarters. Since so many of the educators I serve are PSERS members, I had to stop and snap a quick selfie!

Also, the Whitaker Center is fantastic! My 11 and 9 year old kids were fully engaged the entire time and gave the best feedback possible when we left: "Well, that was a success!" (Ziva) and "That was fun!" (Ari). From close-up interactions with frogs and geckos to a foley recording studio to a high-tech gaming lab and so much more, I cannot recommend this hands-on discovery experience highly enough for families! https://www.whitakercenter.org/science-center/

Teachers. Custodians. Paraprofessionals. Administrators. Food services. Assistants. Secretaries. Security guards. Bus drivers.

You all do SO MUCH for our kids and our communities, and we can never thank you enough.

CONGRATULATIONS and THANK YOU to those of you who are retiring as this school year ends!

And, to those of you who still have a few—or a lot—of years until retirement and are now on “summer hours,” enjoy your well-deserved quieter time!
(Let’s connect and look at your retirement preparedness during these summer months!)
