Every time I cleared a hurdle, another one appeared that I hadn’t imagined was even a thing. By the end, I understood why people in these buildings used to pray so much.

Through all of that, Rick and his team were steady. They stayed calm, kept things moving, and helped me navigate a process that occasionally felt like it was being written live by someone who disliked me personally. Their patience and persistence made a huge difference, especially when mine were being held together by coffee and an increasingly questionable amount of optimism.

I’ve now spent the last two days working on the church for 16 hours a day. Somewhere between hauling out debris and discovering the next thing that needs fixing, I’ve occasionally stopped and thought, “What the h am I doing?” Then I remember that I fought this hard because I saw something worth saving, and that the best things I’ve done in my life have usually included a moment when I questioned my entire decision making apparatus.

I hope to sit and enjoy some peace here soon but for now, my Apple Watch thinks I’m training for the Olympics.
