In 1972 when I was 11 years old, my father bought a bakery in downtown Washington and I went to work. The job was about 20 hours per week spread over all 7 days of the week. When I turned 16, my hours were increased to about 40 hours per week, still spread over all 7 days of the week. I went in at 4:00 am to fry donuts, then I filled the orders and made the deliveries to restaurants and the hospital before going to High School. In the evenings, I helped close the store and set the dry ingredients for the next day.

In 1978, I graduated High School in May, turned 18 in July, got married in August, and became a father in December. I spent the next 8 years working 2 and sometimes 3 jobs. In 1986, I went to work for The Prudential Insurance Company and stayed with them for 10 years. In 1996, I joined Missouri Farm Bureau as an insurance agent. Most of my 40 years in the insurance industry have had me working 50 hours or more per week.

I am now 66 years old and as of October 31st, I will have completed 30 years of service with Missouri Farm Bureau Insurance Brokerage Inc. I have decided that this milestone marks my time to retire.

It has been an honor to earn people’s trust and help them meet their insurance needs. I feel extremely fortunate to have built a career helping others protect themselves from financial hardship.

I have heard many people referring to a "grace period" when referring to their home, auto and business insurance. This is a misconception because state laws require insurance companies to send a 10 day written notice of cancellation, but the policy is actually lapsed. If the payment is received before that 10 days is up, the policy is reinstated with no lapse in coverage. But if there is a claim turned in prior to the payment being received, there is technically no coverage and a claim could become a nightmare. Best advice, pay the premiums BEFORE the due date!!
