Who Needs an Umbrella Policy, and What Does It Actually Protect?
Your homeowners insurance already includes liability coverage. So why consider an umbrella policy?
A personal umbrella policy provides an additional layer of liability protection above certain underlying policies, such as homeowners, renters, or auto insurance. It may also cover certain claims not covered by the underlying policy, depending on its terms.
What can it help protect against?
An umbrella policy may provide additional coverage for certain claims involving:
• Bodily injury
• Property damage
• Personal injury
• Legal defense costs
Who might consider one?
There isn't one income or asset level that automatically means you need umbrella coverage. It may be worth discussing with an insurance professional if you have significant assets or additional liability exposures, such as a rental property, swimming pool, or teenage driver.
An umbrella policy doesn't replace your homeowners or auto insurance. Its primary purpose is additional liability protection.
The question is:
Do your current liability limits and coverage fit the risks and assets you need to protect?
