🎬 CASTING: Veteran Family and Supporting Roles for a Fisher House Detroit Film
Shooting November 2026 · Detroit, MI

“Because love is good medicine.”

Fisher House Detroit is a free home away from home for the families who stand beside veterans through medical treatment, right near the VA hospital and some of the best care available anywhere. We’re making a cinematic short film that follows one family through their stay and ends with their reunion, showing Detroit as a city that cares for its veterans and the families who love them.

The family (lead roles)

Dad, a veteran, 40–50
Mom, 38–50
Son, 9–12 (a parent or guardian must be on set)
Real families are welcome and encouraged to apply together.

Supporting roles

Fisher House staff member, 30–60
Volunteer, 20s–60s
Older veteran, 60–80, with an adult daughter, 30–50
A second couple or family, any ages, including grandparents and young adults
Veterans are especially encouraged to apply.

The details
No speaking lines and no acting experience needed. We care about warmth and authenticity. This is an unpaid, one-day shoot (about 8 hours) at Fisher House Detroit, with meals on set. You’ll receive the finished film for your reel within 30 days of release, shot on an ARRI Alexa Mini LF with a full professional crew.

November is National Veterans and Military Families Month, a time to honor the service members, veterans, and families who share in the commitment to protect our country.

Behind every person who serves is a family that serves too. Spouses, children, parents, and loved ones carry the weight of deployments, relocations, missed holidays, and long stretches apart, often with a quiet strength that goes unseen. This month, we recognize the veterans who answered the call and the families who stood beside them every step of the way. Your sacrifice and resilience make a difference in communities across the country.

To every veteran and military family: thank you for all that you give. ❤️🤍💙

Mark your calendar! The West Michigan Veterans & Family Resource and Empowerment Gathering is Saturday, November 7, from 4 to 7 PM with a special event right after starting at 8 PM at Hero’s and Shero’s Corner, 4809 Eastern Ave SE, Kentwood.

It’s free, family-friendly, and open to everyone. Come meet local organizations and resources, enjoy a free comfort food dinner prepared by MIWVE youth from their Dirt Therapy Garden, and stay for door prizes, a 50/50 raffle, and time to connect with fellow veterans and families.

Hear from keynote speaker Kwesi Betserai, City of Detroit Veteran Affairs Manager and U.S. Army veteran, along with Peter Kalogiros, Sebriena P., and Lauren Sowell. Sgt. Stephanie Shannon will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies.

At 8 PM, Anietra Hensley (MrzLoveMeForReal) leads a Southern Soul line dancing experience. A $10 donation is requested at the door for the 8 PM entertainment.

Know a hero who could use a little help?

Every day, the heroes in our community show up for others: police officers, firefighters, EMS, nurses, teachers, and military members and veterans. Sometimes they’re the ones who need someone to show up for them.

Through Homes for Heroes’ annual 12 Days of Christmas Miracles, twelve heroes will each receive a $600 Christmas Miracle to use where it will make the most difference for them and their family.

Maybe someone you know has been through an unexpected hardship or is struggling to make ends meet. Tell us their story.
