Whitebark pine is in drastic decline due to a fatal infection called white pine blister rust. Over 325 million whitebark pine trees are estimated to have been lost. In 2022, the whitebark pine was classified as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. By planting a variety of disease-resistant seedlings and managing current trees, land managers can work towards regenerating whitebark pine forests.
