Lifecare Affordability Plan The Lifecare Affordability Plan® is a healthcare-driven financial planning process for older adults.

For more than two decades, SEIA has provided holistic wealth management services to clients in the Washington, DC metro area. As part of this engagement, we have worked with families facing the declining health of their loved ones to help them navigate the complexities of healthcare support and housing and understand their financial options. In 2018, seeing the need to bring this solution to a larger audience, SEIA introduced the Lifecare Affordability Plan®, a flat-rate financial service that includes:

• Coordination with healthcare services. We work directly with healthcare providers to fully understand each patient’s care plan and potential clinical paths.
• Comprehensive financial review: We review all available income, assets, government benefits, liabilities, and ongoing costs to get a full picture of your financial situation.
• Family education: We engage with family members and advocates early in the planning process to make sure that the support team is informed and educated.
• Care-plan driven financial planning. The LCAP™ is an easy-to-understand action plan that helps you pay for the best possible care at a sustainable level. Each LCAP is developed for your family's unique circumstances. Your LCAP provides you with clear guidance on alternative courses of action and budgets. Your LCAP is designed to maximize care options while minimizing the financial impact on your family's security and quality of life.
• Step-by-step guidance. Our long history working with clients in crisis provides us with the long-term perspective needed to direct families to the suitable paths to take to achieve desired outcomes.
• Option to create investment portfolios. We can design customized investment portfolios that help preserve assets and generate liquidity while managing risk.

The Medicare coverage that worked when you first enrolled may not be the best fit years later.

Your health needs, prescriptions, doctors, preferred hospitals, travel habits, and budget can change. Plans can change, too. Make time each year to review what you have and ask whether it still supports how you receive care.

A simple annual checklist:
• Confirm that your doctors and providers participate.
• Review prescription coverage and costs.
• Compare expected out-of-pocket expenses.
• Check plan notices for changes.
• Ask for help if the choices feel overwhelming.

After a breast cancer diagnosis, it is okay to take things one step at a time.

Along with medical questions, talk about rides, meals, household help, work schedules, paperwork, and expenses.

Asking for support is part of the plan. No one has to face this alone.

Many families tell us, “We will figure out care costs when the time comes.”

Unfortunately, the reality is that waiting usually limits your choices. Start now by asking what care might cost, what your current coverage includes, and who should be in the conversation.

If your family’s care needs changed tomorrow, what would you do first? Who would make the calls, organize the information, and keep everyone moving in the same direction?

The answer may involve more than one person: someone for health decisions, someone for finances, and someone for legal or household matters.

Naming roles before a crisis can reduce confusion and help everyone work from the same plan.

If you are receiving care in a hospital, staying overnight does not always mean you have been formally admitted. You may be under observation, which is generally considered outpatient status.

Why does that matter? Your status may affect what Medicare covers next and what you may owe, including costs connected with follow-up or rehabilitation care.

Ask:
• Am I formally admitted or under observation?
• When did my status begin?
• How could this affect my coverage and next care setting?
• Who can explain my expected costs?

Bring a trusted person who can listen, take notes, and help you follow up. Listen to our podcast with John Norce to learn more: https://loom.ly/XCjp8Ok

Medical care is only one part of supporting someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Daily routines, transportation, meals, bills, safety, and caregiver breaks matter too.

Make a list of recurring needs, then ask family and friends to choose one way they can help.
