Today marks twenty-five years since September 11, 2001 — a day that reshaped our nation and one I carry with me personally as a former New Yorker. I lost friends that day, and every year on this date I think of them: their laughter, the futures they should have had, the families who have carried that loss for a quarter century now.

What I remember most from that time, though, isn't only the horror — it's what came after. Neighbors who became family. Strangers who carried strangers. A city, and a country, that leaned on each other to keep standing.

That's the same spirit that animates our work at The Father Center every day. Fatherhood, family, community — these aren't abstractions to me. They're what got us through September 11th, and they're what will get families through whatever they face today. When we show up for a father trying to hold his family together, we're living out the same lesson that day taught me: that showing up for one another is how we survive, and how we heal.

Please take a moment today to remember those we lost, to hug the people you love a little tighter, and to recommit — as I do every year — to the work of building strong families and stronger communities.

With gratitude and remembrance,
Bryan Adé Evans CEO, The Father Center of New Jersey

We are proud to celebrate Ariel and the incredible progress he has made through The Father Center of New Jersey!

Ariel has taken advantage of several opportunities offered through TFCNJ, successfully completing Flagger Certification, Job Readiness, and Computer Literacy training. He also reached another important milestone by obtaining his driver’s permit through our Drive2Independence class.

These accomplishments represent Ariel’s dedication, hard work, and commitment to building a brighter future. Each new skill and achievement brings him one step closer to greater independence and new employment opportunities.

At TFCNJ, we are extremely proud to have been part of Ariel’s journey and to support him along the way. We know this is only the beginning, and we look forward to seeing all that he will accomplish as he continues to build a better future for himself.

Congratulations, Ariel! Keep moving forward—your future is full of possibilities!

Employee of the Month Spotlight: Shaquania Pressley 🎉

For the past two and a half years, Shaquania Pressley has helped participants pursue their career goals as a career counselor in The Father Center of New Jersey’s Westampton office.

What inspired her to pursue a career in the nonprofit sector? “I’ve always had a natural desire to help people, and I believe I get that from my parents, who both have careers centered on services,” she notes. Shaquania grew up watching her father mentor, coach and “adopt” youth, teens and adults who needed guidance.

For Shaquania, the most rewarding part of her work at The Father Center of New Jersey is helping people from all walks of life navigate their individual challenges and achieve their goals. “When participants reach their goals and tell me about it, it’s like a win for me, too!”

One participant’s success remains especially meaningful. Shaquania helped him earn his commercial driver’s license despite the barriers he faced. He is now successfully employed, married and able to provide for his daughter.

“He was the first participant I helped obtain a CDL-B, so his story will always be special to me,” she says.

Outside of work, Shaquania enjoys spending time with family and friends and reading. One fact that may surprise her colleagues? She is “slightly obsessed” with horror and psychological thriller books and video games.

Congratulations to Shaquania Pressley, TFCNJ’s Employee of the Month!

The Father Center of New Jersey is excited to celebrate the success of our very first Conversations on Canvas class! 👏 This creative and engaging session provided participants with an opportunity to step away from the everyday stresses of life and release mental stress through the power of painting.

Participants were able to express themselves creatively, relax, and enjoy a positive environment while connecting with others. Sometimes, putting your thoughts and emotions onto a canvas can be a powerful way to unwind, reflect, and recharge.
A big shout-out to our Career Instructor, Brian Wingate, for guiding our participants through the session and creating a welcoming space where everyone could explore their creativity.

We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to JB Bakery for generously donating delicious donuts for our first class! Your support helped make the experience even more special for our participants.

We look forward to continuing Conversations on Canvas and creating more opportunities for our participants to grow, connect, and express themselves.

The Father Center of New Jersey (TFCNJ) would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Joeliza Rosado and Eric Murchinson from Mid Penn Bank for accepting our invitation and spending time with our participants.

During their visit, Eric Murchinson presented his book, Who’s Your Banker, and shared valuable information about entrepreneurship and the process of opening and managing a small business. His presentation encouraged participants to think about financial opportunities, building relationships with financial institutions, and taking steps toward becoming successful business owners.

We greatly appreciate the time Eric took to share his knowledge, experiences, and resources with our participants.

Join us in congratulating WIB program participant Jason Testa, who just secured a job at Walmart.

Throughout the program, Jason was always willing to support and encourage his fellow participants, even sharing job leads and employment opportunities with others. He genuinely wanted to see those around him succeed as well.

Jason also went above and beyond when he helped another participant get a free phone, helping to ensure that the participant had the resources he needed to stay connected and pursue employment opportunities.

Well done Jason! Read more about his story here: https://thefathercenter.org/wib-participant-jason-testa/

Board Spotlight: Shaun Mickus

After nearly 30 years at Johnson & Johnson and 35 years in the healthcare industry, Shaun set three simple goals for his work in this next chapter: find work that brings him joy, helps as many people as possible, and minimizes the stress and deadlines of corporate life.

Serving on the Board of Trustees of The Father Center of New Jersey checked every box.

Although he didn’t grow up with a consistent father figure himself, he considers himself fortunate to have had other positive male role models in his life who “kept me out of trouble.”

Years later, during a men’s retreat at his church, a talk about a father’s loving care prompted him to reflect on his own childhood. The experience reinforced his desire to help young men find the kind of guidance and support that shaped his own life.

Michael Velasquez of the New Life Driving School recently came to The Father Center of New Jersey to talk about the importance of obtaining a driver’s license and pursuing a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) as a pathway to stable employment, sharing his personal journey to members of our cohort.

Michael’s presentation provided valuable insight into the CDL process, training requirements, career opportunities, and the long-term benefits of entering the transportation industry.

“Seeing someone who has overcome challenges and achieved success gave our participants hope and motivation to continue working toward their own goals,” says Yanira Medina, Senior Program Manager/WIB Program Manager (Bilingual).
