Fifty years ago, fifteen 14-year-old boys from Tampa's North Palomino PONY League traveled to Washington, Pennsylvania, to play in the PONY League World Series. Somehow, we came home as World Champions.

This past weekend, eight of us had the incredible privilege of returning to Washington to celebrate the 50th anniversary of that magical summer of 1976. We were introduced on the field between games and later honored at a reception at PONY Baseball International's headquarters.

Standing there together again, five decades later, I couldn't help but think about the gift of hindsight. At 14, we thought we were playing for a championship. We thought the trophy and the title were the prize.

We were wrong.

The real prize was everything that took root in that group of 14-year-olds that summer: teamwork, perseverance, trust, humility, accountability—and, perhaps most importantly, lifelong friendships. Those lessons didn't end when the final game was over. They matured with us and, in ways we probably never recognized at the time, helped shape the men we became.

Fifty years later, the trophy is a wonderful reminder of what we accomplished. But the friendships, the memories, and the values we carried forward are what we truly won. And while eight of us were fortunate enough to make the trip back this weekend, the bond we formed as a team has endured through the years and through loss. All of us who wore that uniform remain connected by what we shared that summer. Five decades later, we're still teammates in every way that matters.

We were extraordinarily fortunate to have been given that experience—and even more fortunate to still carry it with us five decades later. 1976 was a magical summer. And looking back with the advantage of hindsight, I realize just how much more we took home from Washington than a championship.
