Last week brought some good news for interest rates. The average top-tier 30-year fixed mortgage rate dropped more than 0.20% from the previous week’s highs. This happened because financial markets felt a bit more stable, thanks to no new major developments in the trade war.

Even with this improvement, rates are still higher than they were during most of the last two months. Also, there’s still a chance that rates could become more unpredictable, especially when the market reacts more strongly to news about government policy than to actual economic data.

Recently, there have been strong public criticisms of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell by the President. Whether or not those criticisms are fair, the market seems unsettled by them. Investors have shown their concern by selling off stocks and pushing interest rates up.

As a result, mortgage rates rose noticeably today. The average lender increased rates for top-tier 30-year fixed mortgages from 6.87% to just under 7.00%.

Being a broker the rates I can get are typically lower, much lower than average which is why they are posted in real time on my website.
