Its the season to make Smore’s, lets get ready.
Has your firepit been in storage? Ignored like the pile of laundry that just lives in the corner of your bedroom? Well. Lets get it ready before the warm weather goes away.
Here’s how to clean up a firepit that’s been in storage (or has been ignored outside)
1. Remove the cover and check for pooled water, mold, or debris that collected while stored.
2. Clear out nests or critters — stored firepits, especially covered ones, are prime real estate for spiders, mice, or birds over winter. Check thoroughly before lighting anything.
3. Dump out old ash/debris — even if it was “cleaned” before storage, leftover residue can absorb moisture and turn into a sludgy mess.
4. Inspect for rust or corrosion — metal firepits are especially prone to rust after months of humidity or condensation. Wire-brush any rust spots.
5. Check for cracks or warping — look over stone, brick, or metal for storage damage before use.
6. Wipe down/wash the surface — mild soap and water for metal; a stiff brush for stone or cast iron.
7. Dry completely before your first fire — trapped moisture can cause smoking, uneven burning, or damage from thermal shock.
