With the end of the year in sight, it is a great time to grab a cup of coffee and take a few minutes to review these important financial reminders. A little preparation now can help you avoid missed deadlines and start the new year on the right foot.

End-of-Year Financial Checklist:

Open Enrollment: Review your health insurance, employer benefits, and available coverage options. Make sure your elections still fit your needs and budget for the upcoming year.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA): Check your remaining balance and plan deadlines. Depending on your employer’s plan, unused funds may be forfeited.

Charitable Contributions: If you plan to make charitable donations, review the applicable tax rules and keep records of your contributions.

Property Taxes: Review your real estate and personal property tax bills, confirm payment deadlines, and keep documentation for tax preparation.

Retirement Contributions: Review your progress toward annual contribution limits for your 401(k), IRA, or other retirement accounts. Remember that some contribution deadlines extend beyond December 31.

Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs): If you are required to take an RMD, make sure you understand your deadline and have a plan to complete it.

Tax Planning Opportunities: Consider whether year-end strategies such as tax-loss harvesting, Roth conversions, or managing capital gains may make sense for your situation.

End-of-year planning is a great opportunity to make thoughtful decisions about your finances before the new year begins.

If you have questions about your year-end planning or potential tax strategies, our team at KFB Wealth Group is here to help.

Is a trust an estate planning strategy that is right for you?

A trust might make sense if:
• You want to avoid probate and keep things private
• You have minor children or want to control how and when assets are distributed to your heirs
• You want to plan for incapacity, not just what happens after death
• You have a more complex financial situation or specific wishes for your assets after you pass.

A trust can involve more upfront planning, costs, and ongoing management compared to a simple will.

It is important to know if trusts fit your situation and your goals.

The best plan is the one that gives you clarity, control, and confidence. Reach out today to discuss more in depth if a trust is right for you.

One of the most important parts of your estate plan isn’t in your will.

It’s your beneficiary designations.

Accounts like retirement plans, life insurance policies, and bank accounts will pass directly to the person or multiple people listed as beneficiary, avoiding probate completely.

That means it is critical to make sure your beneficiaries are complete and up to date.
• An outdated beneficiary can override your current wishes
• Major life changes (marriage, kids, divorce) should trigger a review
• This is often one of the easiest updates with the biggest impact

Other assets like vehicles and homes can also have a direct beneficiary listed, making the transfer process quick and easy.

It’s a small detail, but one that can completely change how things play out for your family. It is worth a quick review to make sure your beneficiaries are up to date.

Most adults know they should have a valid will or estate plan, but it’s worth taking a closer look at why it truly matters.

A will does more than just distribute your assets...
- it names guardians for minor children
- outlines your final wishes
- helps avoid unnecessary delays and legal complications

Without a will, the courts would decide how some of your assets are divided, and that may not reflect what you truly want.

A power of attorney document is just as important. It allows someone you trust to step in and handle financial or medical decisions if you’re unable to do so yourself. The incapacity could be due to illness, injury, or unexpected circumstances. Without it, your family may have to go through a costly and time-consuming court process just to help manage your affairs.

If you have a family, a home, or even just specific wishes about your care and finances, these documents matter.

Taking the time to put a will and power of attorney in place is one of the most practical ways to protect your loved ones, reduce stress during difficult times, and make sure your voice is heard—even when you can’t speak for yourself.

If you’ve been putting it off, consider this your sign to take the first step. Reach out to see how we can help

Estate planning might feel like something for “later”… but starting early can make a bigger impact than you think.

If you have a job, a home, or especially kids, having a few basics in place can bring clarity and direction:
• A simple will
• Naming guardians for your children
• Power of attorney

It’s not about having everything figured out — it’s about getting something started.

Your future self (and your family) will thank you.
