Mortgage rates continued to creep higher last week, helped along by rising oil prices and markets pricing in a possible Fed rate hike this month after Fed Chair Warsh's comments in Jackson Hole and stronger-than-expected jobs data.

This week features a focus on inflation, and if it comes in higher than expected it will pressure rates higher. Rates will also be influenced by oil prices, which continue to rise. It looks likely that mortgage rates will continue to creep higher unless something unforeseen happens this week.

โข The Fed: Mortgage rates currently reflect about a 60% chance of a Fed rate hike this month, and if inflation comes in hot, that could increase. Mortgage rates rise ahead of actual Fed rate hikes, so if markets anticipate a hike after this week's data, it will push mortgage rates higher to end the week.
โข Inflation data: Wholesale inflation data comes out on Thursday, with consumer inflation data on Friday. If inflation comes in hotter than expected, it could push mortgage rates up to end the week.
โข Oil: If oil prices continue to rise this week, it will pressure mortgage rates higher.
