Teaching a teen to drive is about more than learning the rules of the road.

Skills like recognizing potential hazards, making safe decisions, and staying focused on the road take practice and repetition.

That’s why PEMCO partners with the Parent’s Supervised Driving Program to support parents in Washington and Oregon as they teach their teens to drive. Through educational resources, the RoadReady app, and the PEMCO My Driving Program, we’re helping families build safer driving habits from the start.

Skillful car-handling is only one part of avoiding accidents. New teen drivers also must recognize hazards and consistently make safe decisions.

It's hard to believe, summer break is coming to a close. With many Pacific Northwest schools heading back in the coming weeks, roads will be busier with students, families, school buses, pedestrians, and bicyclists, especially during peak travel times.

The final camping trips of summer are here, and so is peak wildfire season across the Pacific Northwest.

Before lighting a campfire, check current burn restrictions and know how to safely build, monitor, and extinguish your fire.

No campfires allowed? A propane fire pit may be a safer alternative and is often permitted during burn bans because it can be shut off immediately. Be sure to check local regulations before heading out.

Think distracted driving only means texting? Think again.

Checking directions, adjusting your infotainment system, taking a sip of coffee, or even simply letting your mind wander can take your attention off the road.

And that distraction can linger. Research shows it can take 27 seconds to fully refocus after a distraction. At 25mph, that’s enough time to travel several football fields.

With distracted driving laws in Washington and Oregon, it's a good reminder to put your phone away and stay focused behind the wheel.
