The U.S. economy is navigating a complex environment: a "low-hire, low-fire" labor market, persistent inflation running well above the Fed's target, and a new Federal Reserve Chair signaling a firm stance on price stability.

Manufacturing Strength & Economic Momentum: The S&P Global PMI rose to 55.3 in May, beating economist expectations and signaling robust manufacturing activity. Jobless claims remain low at 209,000, indicating a stable but muted workforce.

Housing Supply Shift: Single-family housing starts plunged 9% as builders slow production to work off an outsized inventory of new homes.

Inflation: Core PCE inflation rose to 3.3%, well above the Fed's 2% target, and long-term inflation expectations climbed to a 7-month high of 3.9%. Fed Governors Waller and Cook warned of potential rate hikes if inflation doesn't abate, and newly sworn-in Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is emphasizing price stability.

Consumer Sentiment: The Consumer Sentiment Index hit a record low of 44.8 as households grapple with inflation and broader economic uncertainty.
