I am originally from the small town of Walker, Louisiana located about 20 miles outside of Baton Rouge and where I still have lots of friends and family. I left Louisiana when I turned 19 to serve a service mission for my church. I spent the next 2 years of my life in and around the Lisbon Portugal area as well as a seven month stint on the West African Island of Fogo, Cape Verde. My missionary op

ened my eyes and engrained in me a love of people and travel and I have wanted to see the world since. My parents thought I was kidding when I came home and told them I wanted to turn right back around and leave to go to school in Hawaii! After two and a half years there, and countless incredible experiences, many of my closest friends that I had made were moving to, or back to, Utah. Naturally, I thought I'd give that a try so I packed my bags, said my goodbyes and traded the sand for the snow (not sure what I was thinking there!)
Fast forward 15 years, I live in Taylorville, UT and I am an incredibly happy man! I’ve been married to my best friend since 2006 with a beautiful and spunky 8 yr old girl who admittedly has me wrapped around her finger, a 5 year old boy who loves anything sports related, a 2 yr old little boy who keeps us plenty busy, and our family dog, Bones who is crazy! I am a graduate of BYU-Idaho, a Loyal LSU fan (Geaux Tigers!!), and a UTE season ticket holder (next best thing!) I love to snowboard, boat, hunt, fish, coach my boys in their sports endeavors, and generally just hanging out with my family. I am a residential Mortgage Banker by profession and have been since 2003. I have been blessed and lucky enough to survive and thrive through the whirlwinds of change through much diligence and an emphasis on service. Since 2013 I’ve managed the Union Park Branch of Security National Mortgage Company which has been an incredible experience and taken to places I never imagined. In 2016 I was named the Top Producing Loan Officer of the Salt Lake Region of Security National. I love what I do and live by the mantra “work hard, play hard!”

Saving for a home while paying rent and everyday expenses can feel like trying to reach a moving target.
That is exactly why down payment and homebuyer assistance programs exist.
Depending on where you live and your qualifications, assistance may be available to help with down payment or closing costs.
Programs and eligibility vary, so the best place to begin is not by assuming you qualify or do not qualify.
Begin by asking what is available to you.

You do not have to wait until you find a house you love to talk to a lender.
In fact, starting earlier can give you time to understand your buying power, discuss financing options, work through potential challenges, and establish a comfortable price range.
Then, when the right home does come along, you can spend less time wondering what is possible and more time deciding whether it feels like home.

If your credit is keeping you from even asking about a mortgage, it may be worth having the conversation anyway.
Mortgage qualification can involve several factors, including income, debt, assets, credit history, property type, and the loan program being considered.
And if you are not ready today, understanding why can help you build a clearer path forward.
A “not yet” does not always mean “not possible.”

There can be a lot of pressure around buying a home.
The perfect neighborhood. The perfect amount of space. The place you will stay forever.
But sometimes your first home is simply the place that fits your life right now.
A condo, townhome, smaller home, or different neighborhood may be the beginning that eventually helps you reach something bigger.
Homeownership does not have to begin with your dream home. It can begin with a smart first step.

One of the biggest misconceptions about buying a home is that you need 20% down.
Depending on the loan program and your qualifications, there may be options that require significantly less. Some buyers may also qualify for down payment assistance programs.
The right amount to put down is not the same for everyone.
Before assuming homeownership is out of reach, find out what the numbers could actually look like for you.
