It’s a harsh reality of parenthood: Kids grow up fast. Before you know it, they’ll be trading in that bicycle for a car and getting ready to head off to college.

While it’s true that the years seem to fly by, photos last forever – making them a great way to capture and display your favorite memories.

But unfortunately, kids often make less-than-cooperative photography subjects. This leaves us with family photos that aren’t quite suited for display on your wall or mantle.

Looking for ways to take amazing, professional-looking photos of your kids? Here are seven tips to help you perfectly capture the moments worth remembering:

• Snap pictures at their level. Shooting photos from different angles can make a huge impact on the quality of your images. Rather than standing with your camera pointed down at your kids, try getting down on their level. Or lay on the ground and shoot up. You’ll find these angles will help you better capture those priceless facial expressions.
• Capture them in their natural state. Forced smiles and awkward posing often results in photos that look, well, forced and awkward. When taking pictures, your child doesn’t always need to sit or stand still while looking right into the camera. Instead, try capturing more candid moments. It might be a sibling that brings out that laugh or a grin from ear to ear. Or pure joy on display while visiting the zoo or swinging on your backyard playset.
• Earn a smile from your child. Asking your child to smile and “say cheese” doesn’t always bring out the big grin you’re looking for. So try eliciting a more authentic smile, instead. For young children, it may only require a simple game of peek-a-boo. For older kids, jumping jacks, jokes or silly faces from an adult may do the trick.
• Simplify your background. When taking photos, make sure your child remains the focus of your picture. This means avoiding frames jam-packed with visual distractions. Remember that when it comes to your family photos, sometimes less is more.
• Avoid using your flash. On many cameras, your flash will come on automatically. However, unless the light level is really low, flash photography can make for unflattering photos. Plus, your child will be more inclined to blink or squint at all that artificial light. When possible, always opt for a setting with natural light. You don’t even have to go outside. It may be as simple as having your child face a window to take advantage of the sunlight.
• Move away from your lens. Making eye contact with your child can help shift their focus toward you and the camera. To direct their gaze, try peeking out from behind the camera — or moving back and forth to capture their attention.
• Frame your shot. Composition is an important part of taking a great photo. When capturing pictures of your kids, avoid dead space in your images by making sure they fill the frame. Another time-tested tip is to use the “rule of thirds.” Imagine drawing a set of vertical and horizontal lines across your photo to create a three-by-three grid. Then, try to position the subject of your photo where the imaginary grid lines meet.

Protect your good life

Home is where love lives and memories are made. It’s also the place where you’ll capture those simple moments that turn into photos that stand the test of time.

Make sure your home is fully protected with the best homeowners insurance.

Buying home insurance is a key step in protecting your assets. You want the best coverage...but you ALSO don't want to spend a fortune! The good new is...Depending on your current policy, you have ways to SAVE on your insurance without giving up the coverage you need.

1. Increase the Deductible
The deductible is the amount you pay when filing a claim. After you pay this specified, your insurer will likely cover the rest of the costs. The deductible can range from $500 to several thousand dollars, depending on what you set it to.

By setting a higher deductible, you might pay less on your monthly premiums. However, it’s important to ensure you have enough funds to pay the full amount if a disaster occurs. So, only increase your deductible to an amount you can easily pay.

2. Increase the Safety of the Property
Adding an alarm system, fire detectors or similar safety solutions to your home may cut your premiums. Safety precautions reduce the risk of major damage to your property. Many insurance providers offer discounts for certain safety measures.

3. Avoid Making Claims on Small Problems
Avoid making small claims on your policy. Only file a claim when your property has major damage from a covered incident. This may help you to avoid high-cost premiums.

The claims you make on the policy generally remain on your insurance record. Because of this, your insurance premium will likely rise when you make claims on your policy.

4. Update the Property
Older homes are not always easy to insure for a low rate. These homes have a higher risk of costly issues, so insurers generally charge higher premiums to cover them. Updating your electrical system, pipes and other areas of aging infrastructure can help you reduce the risks to the property. Repairs might allow you to obtain a lower monthly rate for home insurance.

Home insurance protects your assets and allows you to focus on enjoying homeownership. By taking steps to keep your property safe and up-to-date, you can reduce your monthly insurance bills. Best of all, you can do this without skimping on coverage.

August in the garden can be challenging for both gardeners and plants. But it’s also a time to evaluate your garden, both the successes and the failures, and decide what you may want to change for next year.

Here are some tips to keep your gardens healthy in the heat of August.

1. Pull w**ds as soon as you notice them, before they go to seed in the garden. This will help reduce overwintering w**ds that can wreak havoc next year. Use the hand w**der for tough w**ds like dandelions and thistles.

2. Remove spent flowers (deadhead) on annuals, roses and perennials. Many will reward you with more blooms that continue well into fall.

Certain flowers are good candidates for drying including hydrangea blossoms, globe amaranth, celosia, straw flowers and ornamental grasses. Harvest them when they are dry in the morning but before noon when temperatures begin to get hot. With annual flowers, select those that are not fully open.

• Once you cut the stems, strip all the leaves and remove any damaged parts of the flower.
• Store them in a dry, dark, warm place, preferably one with good air circulation.
• Depending on the type of flower, it may take two to three weeks before they are completely dry.
• You can also hang them upside down to dry, or in a vase without water.
• Once they dry completely, the blooms should last for years, although the colors will fade over time.

3. Prune and remove dead branches on shrubs and small trees.

4. Keep new plantings (planted within the past six months) of flowers, shrubs and trees watered during hot, dry spells. Apply a fresh layer of mulch (1 to 2 inches thick) after you w**d. This will help the soil maintain moisture and reduce future w**d crops.

5. Have your soil tested. A simple soil test can help you determine which nutrients may be lacking and what you need to add (according to what you are growing.) in the way of amendments to ensure your plants will thrive.

6. Order spring flowering bulbs like daffodils and tulips. Most companies will ship them to you at the appropriate time in the fall. The soil temperature should be 15°C or cooler before you plant.

7. Photograph your garden to help you remember where plants are. This will help during the Winter as you plan for new plantings, a new deck or water features.

Happy Gardening.

During this Summer heat, pay attention to your pets behavior, you could save their life...

1. Heavy Panting
It’s normal for pets to pant, especially after chasing toys, running around the house or after spending time outdoors on a warm day. What isn’t normal is heavy panting. What’s the difference? Heavy panting usually means deeper, labored breathing and may last longer than normal panting associated with excitement, playtime or cooling down.

Heavy panting could mean your dog or cat is in pain and may be suffering from heatstroke, poisoning, heart failure, Cushing’s disease, pneumonia, or lung tumors.

2. Drooling
Those of you with dogs such as Boxers, Bloodhounds, Mastiffs or Saint Bernards know drool is a package deal. Sudden, excessive drooling may indicate heatstroke, dental issues such as periodontitis or a tooth abscess — or your pet has chomped down on something that has irritated or burned the mouth, has eaten a toxic plant or is suffering from a neurological problem.

3. Excessive Consumption of Water
You’ve probably seen your pet slurp away at water — perhaps even lie down and straddle the water bowl following play time, especially if outdoors on a warm day.

Watching your pet return again and again to the water bowl over a period of time is not normal. Drinking too much water can be a sign of kidney failure, diabetes mellitus, Cushing’s disease, pyometra in unspayed female dogs or, less commonly, psychogenic polydipsia, when is related to a behavioral issue not due to illness.

If you do notice a difference in your pets behavior, PLEASE always consult your vet

Cruising with the windows down is one of summer’s greatest simple pleasures. But if you’ve got kiddos and pets in the back seat, don’t forget to stay alert when you roll them back up.

Power windows can cause injury if little fingers, hands or limbs are in the way. Injuries can be more serious – or even fatal – if the window closes on a child’s head or neck. In a recent study, it is estimated that 2,000 people each year are treated in hospital emergency rooms for injuries from power windows, and more than half of those are children.

As a parent, here are 4 things you should know:

1. POWER WINDOWS CAN EXERT AN UPWARD FORCE OF 30-80 POUNDS.
For context, it takes just 22 pounds of force to injure or suffocate an infant. What’s more, the force needed to push a button to roll up a power window is a mere two pounds.

2. SOME WINDOW SWITCHES ARE SAFER THAN OTHERS.
Newer cars will have the safest type – “lever” style, which have to be pulled up to raise a car window. They are mounted vertically and harder to activate by accident.

If you have an older car, watch out for these styles mounted horizontally on the door’s armrest – they’re easier for children (or you!) to hit by mistake:
• Rocker switches are rectangular, and move the glass up when you press one short end and down when you press the other.
• Toggle switches move the window when pushed forward or pulled back.

3. LOOK BEFORE YOU CLOSE
Before you roll up your windows, make sure the path is clear. Many injuries happen, unfortunately, when adults simply forget to check on kids and Pets in the backseat first.

4. A LITTLE PREVENTION GOES A LONG WAY.
First things first: If your car has a backseat window lock, use it!

Also, talk to your kids. Teach them never to play with window switches, or stick their heads out of a car window.

Finally, if you’re not in the driver’s seat, make sure to take the keys out when you leave. Leaving the ignition in the “on” or “accessory” position leaves the power window switches activated.
