Preparing Our Homes for a New School Year
It’s hard to believe another school year is almost here! So today, we’re throwing it back to my kids’ first day of school. Looking at these pictures is such a reminder of just how quickly the years go by.
As we get ready for another school year, I’ve been thinking about how we can prepare not just our kids, but our homes, too.
A few simple things that can make those busy school days feel a little more peaceful:
🏡 Create a drop zone. Give backpacks, shoes, lunch boxes, and school papers a designated home so they don’t take over the house.
📚 Set up a homework spot. It doesn’t have to be fancy! Just a place with good lighting, supplies, and minimal distractions where they know it’s time to focus.
👟 Prepare for the mornings. Lay out clothes, pack backpacks, prep lunches, and get as much ready the night before as possible. Your morning self will thank you!
🗓️ Make schedules visible. A family calendar, chore chart, or weekly schedule can help everyone know what’s coming and keep the household moving in the same direction.
🍎 Stock the kitchen. Have easy breakfast options and after-school snacks ready for those days when everyone walks through the door STARVING.
💚 Create a calm place to come home to. School can be exciting, overwhelming, exhausting, and everything in between. Home should be the place where our kids can take a breath, decompress, and know they are loved.
And most importantly, prepare our hearts, too. The backpacks may be packed and the routines may be ready, but our kids need our patience, encouragement, and grace just as much as they need school supplies.
Here’s to a new school year, a little more organization, a lot of grace, and making the most of these years while we have them.
