Called a "Puppy Scam", this fraud makes a fake posting on social media or online and gets interested customers to send a deposit to hold the puppy. The customer never gets their puppy and loses money. The American Kennel Club has detailed information on how to detect this scam.

Beware that up to 80 percent of websites advertising dogs for sale online are actually nothing more than puppy scams. Here's how to spot them.
