Rhode Island is preparing to end traditional payday lending beginning in 2027, an important change for consumers who have faced extremely high-cost loans.

But gaps may remain when it comes to high-cost lending offered online.

EPI Director of Research and Fiscal Policy Alan Krinsky spoke with Providence Business News about how some fintech lenders can work with out-of-state banks to offer loans with interest rates much higher than state rate caps and why there is still more work to do to protect Rhode Island borrowers.
