FUN FACT FRIDAY | Did the future King of Rock and Roll once sleep under this roof?

Longstanding local tradition says a 21-year-old Elvis Presley stayed at the Exchange Hotel while performing in the Pensacola area in 1956.

Can we prove every detail? Maybe not - but we certainly love that this story has been passed down through generations of Milton history! Come back next Friday. Our old building has plenty more stories.

FUN FACT FRIDAY | This week, our building's history gets a little mysterious.

In 1923, its builder, Charles E. Sudmall, was summoned to a business meeting in downtown Milton, where he was shot and killed. Men were charged, a mistrial followed, and ultimately no one was convicted.

More than 100 years later, questions still remain. And believe it or not, that's not the only fascinating story connected to this building.

A decade of Blackwood. A story that started long before the name.

Blackwood Financial Group is officially 10 years old!

Long before Blackwood opened its doors, Richard and Bessann were working together under another company name, learning, growing, and most importantly, building relationships with the people they had the privilege to serve.

Those early years helped shape a bigger vision: a financial firm where relationships came first, planning was personal, and clients felt genuinely cared for.

Ten years ago, that vision became Blackwood Financial Group.

Today, we’re celebrating a decade under the Blackwood name, but also the many years of hard work, trust, friendships, and relationships that made Blackwood possible in the first place.
To everyone who has trusted us, supported us, introduced someone to us, worked alongside us, or simply cheered us on, thank you for being part of our story.

Here’s to the first 10 years and to a very exciting next chapter.

An honor measured in more than numbers.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate Richard McCool and Bessann Watson for achieving MDRT Top of the Table.

It is an extraordinary professional recognition, but to us, its greatest meaning isn't found in a title or an award.

It is found in the lives behind it.

It represents families who have taken the time to plan for their future. Business owners who have worked to protect what they've built. Parents and grandparents who want to create opportunities for the generations that follow. And people who have trusted Richard, Bessann, and our team to walk alongside them through some of life's biggest decisions.

Every plan has a story behind it. Every conversation represents a family, a dream, a concern, a goal, or a future someone cares deeply about.

Today we’re celebrating the person who keeps everything running smoothly behind the scenes and somehow makes it look effortless.

Julie is the one who calms the chaos, remembers every detail (and every person), makes sure no one feels left out, keeps the office beautiful, and quite honestly, keeps the rest of us alive. From the little things no one notices to the big things everyone depends on, she handles it all with grace, kindness, and a smile.

Blackwood Financial Group simply wouldn’t be the same without her. We are incredibly grateful for all that she does and the heart she brings to our team every day.

Charles E. Sudmall was a prominent local businessman with interests in telephone companies, hotels and other ventures throughout the region - and in 1914, he added this building to his legacy.

But his story takes a very unexpected turn... Come back next Friday.
