You should know each other's financial situations by now (if not, go back and read my post from Sunday). You talked over what both of you want in a home. Now you need a number to shop with.
Getting pre-qualified answers that question, and it's always a good idea to get pre-qualified before you start looking at listings. It shows you what you're eligible to borrow, not what you should spend.
You might see financial experts saying a good budget is around 30% of your income, but in today's market that's often a moving target. Work with a licensed real estate agent who can help keep you within that budget, or even find homes that are under your budget, leaving room for savings, or home repairs as needed.
