Recently, Laura Thompson with Exchange Investment Services, Inc joined students to talk about planning for their financial futures. From setting goals to understanding why it's important to start planning early, students learned how the choices they make today can make a difference down the road.

The two accounts aren't connected, and funds can't transfer between them, according to a 2026 update from Brightstart.com.

That makes things simpler for a lot of families. It's rarely a true either-or decision. Many households end up using both accounts, each one doing its own job. If you're weighing how Trump Accounts and a 529 might fit your family, bring it up the next time we talk.

Here's where the two accounts part ways, starting with who's in control. Trump Accounts is opened for a child, and the money stays locked up until January 1 of the year they turn 18. After that, it works like a traditional individual retirement account. The IRS in 2026 clarified that family, friends, and employers can contribute up to $5,000 per child per year, with employers capped at $2,500 of that.

A 529 runs on different rules. There's no federal cap on yearly contributions, though each state sets its own lifetime limit. The IRS says that a parent can contribute up to $19,000 per year ($38,000 for a couple) without any gift tax paperwork. Money can be withdrawn at any time for qualified education costs, and the earnings are exempt from federal tax.

Trump Accounts and 529s keep coming up in the same conversation. Both put money aside for a child's future. The similarity ends there. One is designed for educational expenses, but the other is open-ended. College, a first home, retirement, or anything else.

🎂 Japan just crossed a milestone: for the first time, more than 100,000 people there are age 100 or older.

According to the country's Health and Welfare Ministry, Japan now counts 107,677 centenarians, up nearly 8,000 from the year before. Almost 88 percent are women. The country's oldest resident, Kyoto's Fuyo Kishimoto, recently turned 114.

🎌 Officials point to progress in medical care, along with healthier lifestyles and diet, as part of what's driving the trend. And Japan isn't alone; life expectancies have been rising in many countries over the past several decades.

It's a good reminder of how many more years many of us may be around for, and why that's worth factoring into conversations about the road ahead, from healthcare to how a longer stretch of years gets supported financially.

That's exactly the kind of long-term thinking we like to talk through together.

After devastating Tennessee wildfires in 2016, her My People Fund provided displaced families with $1,000 a month for six months, no strings attached. She also donated $1 million toward COVID-19 vaccine research and supported schools, scholarships, pediatric care, and communities close to home.

What tied so much of that work together was remarkably simple: trust people, see a need, and respond.
