🏡 This Week’s Blog: Let’s Talk Reverse Mortgages

“But doesn’t the bank take your house?”

If I had a dollar for every time I heard that one... 😉

Reverse mortgages may be one of the most misunderstood mortgage options out there.

❌ The bank doesn't suddenly own your home.
❌ They're not only for people who are struggling financially.
❌ Getting one doesn't mean you can never sell your home.

For the right homeowner, a reverse mortgage can simply be another financial tool—and for someone else, it may not be the right choice at all.

That's why I think understanding how they actually work is so important.

This week on the blog, I'm tackling some of the biggest reverse mortgage myths, including what happens to your home, what your heirs need to know, and what responsibilities you still have as the homeowner.

And there's one option many people don't even know exists: you may be able to use a reverse mortgage to BUY your next home. 👀

🏡 **Stories That Make a House a Home**

This past week reminded me exactly why I started this Wednesday series.

My nephew, who lived with us for a couple of years growing up and has always been more like a son to me, came home with his wife and three of their kids.

And we packed a LOT of memories into one week. ❤️

We explored Dow Gardens, picked blueberries while making up stories about chimps hiding in the bushes, sat around the campfire catching up and reminiscing, and spent a couple of days at a cabin up north tubing until the kids were exhausted.

Then there was the night we decided to take the boat out to watch the sunset and find ice cream... only to realize afterward that we had to find our way back **in the dark, on a lake we'd never been on before.** 😂

Those are the moments.

Not the perfectly planned ones. The silly ones. The adventures. The conversations around the fire. The stories we'll tell the next time we're together.

Of course, we also spent the week trying to convince them they should just move back to Michigan. I'm still working on that one. 😉

It's always hard to watch them leave. And every time we say the same thing:

**We need to do this more often.**

Maybe that's today's story.

Don't wait for the perfect time.

Enjoy your family. Make the trip. Sit around the fire a little longer. Hug them. Tell them you love them.

**Time is precious.**

Because in the end, it's the people and the memories made there that truly make a house a home. ❤️

💗 **No Thursday Blog This Week... and That's Okay.**

Normally Thursdays are blog day around here, but this week I'm taking a little break from writing.

Why?

Because my family is in town, and we're making memories together.

One of the things I love most about helping people buy homes isn't the paperwork or the mortgage.

It's knowing those homes become the backdrop for birthdays, family dinners, laughter, holidays, and visits like this one.

The blog will be back next week.

Today, I'm choosing to be fully present with the people I love.

I hope you're able to make a few memories of your own this week, too. ❤️

Stories that Make a House a Home Wednesday

🏡 The Best Seat in the House

One of my favorite places isn't in some fancy vacation home or five-star resort.

It's right here on our front porch.

Some of my favorite conversations have happened there—with family, friends, neighbors, and sometimes just a quiet cup of tea while the world wakes up.

It's a reminder that home isn't about how big it is or how much it costs.

It's about the memories you make there.

How long does it really take to buy a home?

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that buying a home takes forever.

The truth is... it depends.

Every home purchase is different, but here's a general idea of what the journey looks like:

✅ Get pre-approved (often just a day or two once I have what I need.)

✅ Find the right home (this could be a weekend... or a few months.)

✅ Make an offer and negotiate (could take several days).

✅ Home inspection and appraisal.

✅ Final underwriting.

✅ Closing Day... and the keys are yours! 🔑

For most buyers, the process from an accepted offer to closing is typically around 30 to 45 days. If you're using a program like MSHDA or Rural Development, it can sometimes take a little longer—closer to 45 days.

The biggest delay I see?

Waiting too long to get pre-approved.

The earlier we talk, the smoother everything else tends to go and most times eliminates surprises later.
