With temperatures finally hitting that gorgeous summer stride this week across RI, it is officially grilling season! ☀️🍔

If you are firing up the grill for the first time since last summer, taking just 5 minutes for a quick safety check can save you from a major homeowner's insurance headache (and a ruined dinner).

Before you strike that match, run through this quick "First Fire-Up" Checklist:

🔥 1. The 10-Foot Rule: Pull the grill at least 10 feet away from vinyl siding, deck railings, and overhanging branches. Vinyl siding melts incredibly fast from trapped heat!

🧼 2. Do the "Bubble Test" (For Gas Grills): Hoses can crack over the winter. Wipe a 50/50 mix of dish soap and water onto the hoses, turn the propane on (burners off), and look for bubbles. If you see any, you have a leak—replace the hose before cooking.

🕷️ 3. Clean Out the Winter Critters: Spiders love to nest inside burner tubes, causing dangerous blockages. Clear them out and scrape away old grease traps to prevent sudden flare-ups.

Always open the lid before lighting, keep a fire extinguisher nearby, and never leave a hot grill unattended.
