Starting college for the first time? Between school supply shopping, tuition payments, and job hunting, you’re likely moving money in more places than usual, which makes you more susceptible to scams.

Here are a few common scams targeting college students you should know:

• Student loan reimbursement scams. Receive an email saying your student loans are being reimbursed? Don’t accept it at face value, as it could be a scam.

• Tuition imposter fraud. These types of scammers pretend to be an employee at your college or university, contacting students and parents to say they have unpaid tuition and threatening expulsion.

• Scholarship and grant scams. Winner of a scholarship you never applied for? It’s likely illegitimate.

• Phony housing opportunities and apartment listings. As you shop around for college housing, be sure to see the listing in person to verify it’s real.
