Busting Banking Myths: Does checking your credit score lower it?

The short answer is no. There are multiple types of inquiries when it comes to your credit score: “soft inquiries” and “hard inquiries.” Soft inquiries, like checking your score on bank apps, will not reduce your score. However, hard inquiries, like applying for a new credit card or taking out a loan, can impact your score.

We recommend keeping an eye on your credit score to catch any potential errors and maintain your financial health.

People of all ages are susceptible to different types of scams. In the senior community, one of the most common fraud attempts comes from people pretending to be grandchildren in need of help.

These calls or emails seemingly come from grandchildren in distress, needing money to get out of a situation they can’t tell their parents about. This is a highly emotional situation, which can make it easy to want to act quickly. Here are a few signs the call or email you received is fraudulent:

• The phone call, text message, or email comes from a number or address you are not familiar with.
• The person on the other end of the phone has a distorted or unfamiliar voice (sometimes, the voice can sound legitimate).
• The imposter requests unusual payment methods like gift cards to aid in the emergency.
• They’re placing pressure on you to act immediately, without giving you time to stop and think.
• Over the phone, the caller says “it’s me” instead of a specific name.

If you receive a call like this, hang up and call your family member directly. They will be able to confirm whether or not there is a real emergency.

Scams can come out of nowhere, and they can be very convincing. It’s important to arm yourself with the tools you need to protect yourself, your information, and your wallet.

Recognizing that seniors in our community are some of the most vulnerable to fraud, Middlebury College Professor Jay Shapiro and his student, Ken Schoen, came up with a script for seniors to help identify whether a call is a scam and how to move forward. Swipe to see the “ABCDs” to navigating a suspicious call. ➡️

In our recent blog, we outline the most common senior-targeted scams and the warning signs to look out for. Read more at the link below, and share it with your family members to protect them.

What actually goes into your credit score?

At a glance, your credit score number doesn’t give a lot of information, besides telling you which category you belong in: Exceptional, Very Good, Good, Fair, or Poor. But where does that number come from?

Your credit score is calculated based on five categories: payment history (35%), amounts owed (30%), length of credit history (15%), new credit (10%) and credit mix (10%). The number impacts your ability to take out loans, get lower interest rates, and access housing opportunities. If you’re looking to improve your credit score, start by figuring out which category needs the most work. For example, if you only have one credit source, try taking out a new credit card to diversify your credit mix.

Get more information about what makes up your credit score at the link below.
