How coaches respond after an injury can impact both the athlete experience and the situation afterward.

In stressful moments, it’s important to stay calm, focus on the athlete’s immediate needs, document the incident clearly, and avoid making assumptions about fault, severity, or what caused the injury.

Having a clear injury response process helps coaches stay professional and organized when unexpected situations happen. Does your Affiliate have an injury response protocol in place for coaches and staff?

A waiver is one of the most important risk management tools in a gym, but not all waivers offer the same level of protection.

Many Affiliates use outdated templates, vague language, missing signatures, or waivers that don’t fully reflect how their gym actually operates today. Outdoor workouts, competitions, kids programs, recovery services, and evolving training styles can all create gaps if they are not properly addressed.

Here are some common issues gym owners overlook:
✔ Waivers that haven’t been updated in years
✔ Missing language for off-site workouts or events
✔ Digital waivers that are difficult to verify later
✔ Waivers signed before new services were added
✔ Generic templates not designed for CrossFit environments

A waiver should evolve as your Affiliate evolves. If your gym has changed over the years, it may be time to review your documents and risk management processes.

Competitions change the entire risk environment of a gym. Athletes push harder, movement standards break down faster, spectators create congestion, and coaches have less control over pacing and fatigue than they do during a normal class.

Before your next event, take time to evaluate things many Affiliates overlook:

✔ Warm-up flow and congestion
✔ Athlete spacing during transitions
✔ Spectator traffic near competition lanes
✔ Volunteer communication during fast heats
✔ Emergency response planning
✔ Equipment setup under fatigue and speed

The most successful competitions are not just well-programmed. They are well-managed from a safety and operational standpoint too.
