Finance Lingo Friday!

Welcome to Finance Lingo Friday, where every Friday I'll post about some commonly used terms in the finance world and clear up what it means in normal people words.

Our next lingo, what is fee drag?

Fee drag is the concept of the expenses affiliated with running your investment portfolio and the impact those expenses have on the total return. For example, averaging 8% with a 1% fee drag is pretty much the same thing as 7% with 0 fees. Now, you likely won't find anywhere that has no fees as the company you invest through will always get their money but now that you know this, maybe you'll look into your own fee drag!

"Passively managed investments usually have less fee drag."
"You can see that even with the increased fee drag, this fund has historically outperformed that fund."

There you have it! What other words or phrases should we break down to normal people speak?

*Investing involves risk, including loss of principal. This is for educational purposes only—not investment advice. Consult your tax advisor.

Finance Lingo Friday!

Welcome to Finance Lingo Friday, where every Friday I'll post about some commonly used terms in the finance world and clear up what it means in normal people words.

Our next lingo, what does diversification mean?

Diversification is a strategy that mixes a wide variety of investments within a portfolio to reduce exposure to any single asset or risk factor. By spreading capital across different asset classes, sectors, geographies, and tax treatments, investors can aim to mitigate volatility and improve long-term, risk-adjusted returns.

"By increasing your diversification you should see a lower correlation of losses or gains to that stock"
"Diversifying allows for more control over a smart place to access capital especially in a down market."

There you have it! What other words or phrases should we break down to normal people speak?

*Investing involves risk, including loss of principal. This is for educational purposes only—not investment advice. Consult your tax advisor. Diversification does not guarantee greater or more consistent returns or protection against market loss.

Finance Lingo Friday!

Welcome to Finance Lingo Friday, where every Friday I'll post about some commonly used terms in the finance world and clear up what it means in normal people words.

Our next lingo, what does it mean to be tax deferred?

Tax deferral is used to describe money in or going into an account that you have not paid taxes on yet. This is usually done in an attempt to lower the taxes that an individual pays in the year it is earned. The top examples would be a traditional IRA or a traditional 401(K). This means that when you access the money, now you have to pay taxes.

"Your tax deferred accounts can replace your paycheck now that you are over 59.5."
"Your tax deferred accounts have created a bit of a tax bomb for you."

There you have it! What other words or phrases should we break down to normal people speak?

*Investing involves risk, including loss of principal. This is for educational purposes only—not investment advice. Consult your tax advisor.
