Every year, scammers become more sophisticated, and often target the senior members of our communities. According to estimates by the Senior Justice Initiative, a shockingly low number of senior scam victims report their victimization — only 1 in 44!

It’s important to discuss fraud attempts with the seniors in your life to help them know what to look for. These are the most common scam attempts currently targeting seniors. Check out our website to read our full blog on protecting yourself against fraud attempts. Link in bio.

In the text below, we outline 5 of the top scam attempts that target seniors and encourage you to send this list to your elderly family and friends.

1. Identity Theft 🔎
Scammers use identity theft for unemployment, tax, credit card, and romance scams, often tricking victims into sharing personal information.

2. Romance Scams 💔
Romance scams, where scammers pretend to be faraway love interests or military personnel, result in the highest financial losses each year. Scammers request money or gift cards after building trust and claiming emergencies.

3. Computer Tech Support 🖥️
Tech support scams involve computer pop-ups that persuade users to give remote access, leading to bank account and personal information theft.

4. Lottery & Sweepstakes Scams 💸
Lottery and sweepstakes scammers call victims to announce winnings and demand payment for taxes and fees.

5. Grandparent Scams 🧓
Scammers posing as panicked grandchildren, friends, or lawyers request money for emergencies, such as hospital bills, and urge victims not to tell anyone, preying on their emotions.

If at any point you find yourself unsure or suspicious, consult with your bank or another trusted financial advisor to validate the legitimacy of these investments. Taking this one important step can prevent very costly mistakes.

A credit freeze simply restricts access to your credit report, making it more difficult for identity thieves to open new accounts in your name.

It's a simple, free tool that can provide added peace of mind and protection for your personal information. The more you know, the better equipped you are to protect your financial future.

Have questions about credit, fraud prevention, or financial security? Stop by and talk with our team.

How to place one: Contact all three of the credit bureaus — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

When to lift one: Contact the bureau(s) to request it be lifted when you need lenders to access your credit. It is a good idea to identify which bureau a lender will use to check your credit and just lift the freeze at that one bureau, and then put the freeze back in place once the need for a credit check passes.
