1,000 cranes as a symbol of hope and healing…

In Japanese tradition, making 1,000 origami cranes for someone who is seriously ill is a symbol of hope and healing.

Under the direction of Sayre’s college counselor Laura Bonzo-Sims, a group of Upper School students is seeking to craft 1,000 paper birds in honor of Laura’s niece, Lucy. Now a thriving 15-year-old, Lucy was diagnosed with leukemia in the third grade.

To date, the students have made 800 birds. “Watching this in action has been heartwarming,” Laura says.
