In Indiana and Tennessee, voters are being asked to change their state constitutions in a way that would strip away the right to bail for thousands of accused citizens who have not been convicted of anything. Once again, the professional surety bail community has come together and worked over time to educate the general public on what these amendments really mean, from the negatives that come with them to the extreme costs taxpayers will be left to carry. The question every voter should ask is simple: who benefits from this? The answer continues to come back to the private prison system, which stands to gain thousands and thousands of new billing days charged to the state for housing individuals who would be denied bail.
This is a direct attack against our constitution and our rights. Due process is being stripped away, and the presumption of innocence is being treated as an inconvenience rather than the foundation of American justice. The Professional Bail Agents of the United States is so proud of our state associations in Indiana and Tennessee for demonstrating what leadership looks like in their states. Unity in voice, unity in mission, and teamwork are values the PBUS team lives by, and our members in both states have carried those values into this fight every single day.
The battle is not over, and it has been fought with integrity and valor. We will all continue to tell the truth and to speak for those who might not have a voice, because protecting freedom and the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty is not a bail industry issue. These are American values, and they are worth defending.
