Steve Koehler, Certified Financial Fiduciary Certified Financial Fiduciary® (CF2) | I'm legally & ethically bound to put your interests first - always. My focus was never on the surgeon. I share how I work.

Retirement & wealth planning for families & executives across North Atlanta. I'm Steve Koehler, CF2 — a Certified Financial Fiduciary® and independent financial advisor serving families and executives across North Atlanta. Most of my career I worked in the surgical device industry — in the operating room, training surgeons on new techniques and devices. It was always on the patient. That same phil

osophy drives everything I do today. There is a word for prioritizing someone else's wellbeing above all other considerations — fiduciary — and it has been baked into my DNA for decades. I earned the CF2 designation in 2019, becoming one of the first advisors in Georgia to hold it. Not because it was required. Because the families, executives, and business owners I serve deserve an advisor whose commitment to their best interest is unconditional — in every conversation, every recommendation, and every decision across our entire relationship. Through my proprietary Pillars FORMula process, I integrate retirement planning, wealth management, tax planning, life insurance, risk management, estate coordination, and legacy planning into one coherent strategy built around your goals — not a product or commission. The plan evolves as your life does. You will never outgrow it. My wife and I have lived in Alpharetta for 38 years. I've navigated the same life transitions my clients face — career changes, financial setbacks, raising a family, and planning for what comes next. That shared experience matters. It changes the conversation. When we meet for the first time, there is no agenda and no obligation. You share your goals. We decide together if moving forward makes sense.

Every post in this series so far has been about a door you may not have known was there.

This one's about what happens after you walk through it.

More investment choice sounds like an unambiguous good. In practice, it's where a handful of predictable mistakes start — chasing whatever performed well last year, drifting away from any real diversification, losing track of what the added flexibility costs. None of them are exotic. They're just easier to make when nobody's checking.

This video, the sixth in our series, covers the ones I see most often. Worth knowing before you'd need it rather than after.

For most people, the biggest retirement account they own is the one they get the least help with.

Not out of neglect. It's just that a 401(k) tends to fall into a gap - your own advisor doesn't have access to it, and HR can't give investment advice. Some plans do offer a managed option through the provider, where a portfolio gets built from the plan's own funds based on your risk tolerance. Plenty don't. And either way, it's rarely someone who knows the rest of your financial picture.

Most people assume that's simply how it works. It's your employer's plan, so your choices inside it are whatever the plan hands you.

There's often a third option nobody mentions. In a lot of plans, a participant can authorize a financial professional to advise on - or manage - the brokerage window portion of their account. No rollover. No leaving the plan. The money stays exactly where it is.

Whether your plan allows it, and how the process works, varies by provider. This video, the fifth in our series, covers what's typically possible and what to check.

Last week I put out a one-page handout with five questions to ask about your plan's brokerage window. This week, the video behind it.

Because the first question is really: how would you ever find out whether your plan has one? Nobody announces it. It won't be in the enrollment packet, and it's rarely mentioned at the annual benefits meeting.

But it isn't hidden either - there are three ordinary places to look, and once you know the answer, four follow-up questions worth asking. This video, the fourth in our series, walks through all of them.

If digging through plan documents makes your eyes glaze over, that's exactly the kind of thing I'm glad to look at with you. Fifteen minutes on the phone, a recent statement if you have one handy, and we can usually find the answer together.
