On this National Medal of Honor Day, we honor the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of those who have received our nation’s highest recognition for valor in combat — the Medal of Honor — and displayed unwavering bravery in the face of unimaginable challenges.

Created by President Abraham Lincoln in 1861, the Medal of Honor has been awarded to fewer than 4,000 individuals out of the over 40 million who have served in uniform since the Civil War. Today, only 64 Recipients remain — living embodiments of the ideals of courage, sacrifice, and service that define the very fabric of our nation.

But, the Medal is not worn for the honor of one. It is worn by few, for the many. It represents not only those who went “above and beyond” but also the countless service members who stood alongside them, the fallen who made the ultimate sacrifice, and the families who carry their legacies with steadfast devotion.

As the number of living Recipients grows fewer, it becomes our solemn duty to safeguard their stories. These are not merely chapters in history, they are enduring lessons of courage and resilience that continue to inspire and strengthen the values that unite us as Americans.

On this National Medal of Honor Day, join us as we remember, we honor, and we commit to preserving these legacies for generations to come. 🇺🇸
