If your baby pictures feature s**g carpet, your parents might need help navigating Medicare.

Even if they’re still fairly independent, there’s a good chance they could use a thought partner for important decisions, like making sure their healthcare and prescription needs are covered.

Medicare Open Enrollment runs from October 15th to December 7th. Before you get caught up in the holidays, sit down with your parents to go over any new medications, out-of-pocket medical costs, and how satisfied–or not–they are with their current healthcare provider.

I don’t know if anything could have convinced our parents not to carpet over hardwood flooring, but this is at least one area where we can provide much-appreciated support!

Micromanaging your portfolio can be a handful. Doesn’t a handful of kittens sound better?

It’s easy to get pulled into an emotional spiral with every market prediction and performance report. The thing is, reacting to doomsday prophets and short-term market shifts usually just wastes your time and emotional energy.

My best tip is to just opt out. Purge your follows, mute notifications, or unsubscribe if you have to. Work with a financial advisor who you can trust to highlight what actually needs your attention, and then focus on what makes your life better, not on what stresses you out.

Be honest: how many benefits emails have you already archived without opening? 😬

Open enrollment season is a LOT to think through on top of your actual job (hello dropdowns, acronyms, and a deadline you'll definitely remember two days too late). But it’s worth more than a speed-click through on your lunch, because those elections affect more than your premium.

Things like HSA contributions, group life insurance, and disability coverage should mesh well with your bigger financial and estate picture, so before your window closes, take yourself on a coffee date and ask the important questions:

- If you got sick or injured and couldn’t work for several months, would your disability coverage replace enough of your paycheck to cover your essential expenses?

- If your employer offers an HSA or FSA, are you funding it strategically—using an HSA for long-term savings potential or an FSA for expenses you expect this year?

- Are the beneficiaries listed on your workplace life insurance and retirement accounts still the people you actually want to receive that money?

Your inbox may never be cleared (we can dream!), but this is at least one thing you can check off for the price of a latte.

When the mold doesn’t fit, the best thing you can do is break it.

Estate planning can feel extremely limiting if you don’t fit the nuclear family picture. In today’s episode of “things that are easy to forget about,” we’re skipping past changing the furnace filter and heading straight to quarterly taxes.

If you’re self-employed, September 15th is your Q3 deadline, which gives you just enough time to prep:

✔️ Review your year-to-date cash flow
✔️ Revisit your revenue projections
✔️ Flag anything unusual (bonuses, settlements, new income streams)

Speaking of unusual: to all my trial attorney friends who landed a big settlement this summer, don't just cut the check and move on. Any kind of windfall, this one included, needs to be strategically managed, and you need to start thinking about tax mitigation now, not mid-December.
