Three numbers every owner-operator should know right now.

1) Maintenance. The average owner-operator spent $14,375 on maintenance last year, about $1,200 a month. A major breakdown with nothing set aside is still the #1 thing that puts trucks out of business.
2) Fuel mileage. The average is 7.3 mpg, and some drivers are getting 9-10. If you're running at 5, price out the difference.
3) Contribution margin. Take what you're paid per mile and subtract your variable costs per mile. With fuel up about $2 a gallon since February, that number has changed. Know it before you book the next load.

The average owner-operator's revenue grew by about $15,700 year over year. Fuel went up about $7,600. That's a net gain of roughly $8,000, and most of it came in just the last four months.

Net income per mile just passed $1, the highest it's ever been, even above the COVID peak. Our top 10% of American Truck Business Services (ATBS) clients are earning $313,000, and flatbed is leading the way at 17.5% revenue growth.

It might not feel like it after four tough years. But right now is the most owner-operators have ever made per mile.

Back then, rates jumped because there was too much freight. This time freight volume is actually down. Rates are still climbing because drivers are leaving the industry fast: an estimated 180,000 drivers and carriers in the last year alone.

Spot rates hit $3.08 a mile before fuel in June, and contract rates at the big carriers are up 10-20%. Freight markets usually run hot for 2-3 years.
