Four years ago today, I had all the cancer removed from my body through a double mastectomy.

I wish I could say that was the end of the story.

Instead, it was the beginning of a journey I never saw coming.

10+ surgeries. Implants I never really wanted, but because of the way military insurance handled my reconstruction options, my choice at the time was get implants or go flat. Emergency surgeries. Hematomas. Blood transfusions. ICU stays. Complications. More procedures. More scars.

There were days I was strong.

There were days I was angry.

There were days I was scared.

And there were plenty of days I was all three before lunch!

But here I am.

Four years later.

Cancer free.

Scarred, reconstructed, more outspoken than I was before, and VERY willing to give somebody a microphone if we need to talk about women having real choices when it comes to breast reconstruction. Apparently surviving cancer wasn’t enough. We also had to fight insurance companies and policies that decided what our bodies were worth.

HELL TO THE YEAH, I’m still here!

I don’t take that lightly.

I’m grateful for the surgeons who kept putting me back together, the people who loved me through the ugly parts, the blood donors I will never know, and every woman who has shared her story and made another woman feel less alone.

Four years ago today, cancer left my body.

The journey afterward changed me forever.

I’m still standing. 💗
