As we head into the weekend and get to spend time with our families, I want you to take a minute to remember just how important they are to you.

Think about how much you love them, how much you want the best for them, and everything you work so hard to provide for them.

Now, ask yourself a tough question:

If something happened to me, would my family be okay financially without me?

Nobody likes to think about that possibility, but taking care of your family means planning for the unexpected.

When the weekend is over, give me a call. Let's sit down, look at what you already have in place, and make sure your family would be financially protected if you weren't here to provide for them.

Protecting your family isn't just about what happens while you're here. It's about making sure they're taken care of if you're not.

Term vs. Permanent life insurance.

Life insurance can be complicated, not only does it have two main categories, but those main categories break down even further.

The two main life insurance categories are Term life insurance and Permanent life insurance.

Term life insurance is set for a certain time period; 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, or 30 years. (some companies offer different length terms). Term insurance is the cheaper way to make sure you have coverage in place for a predetermined time frame.

Permanent insurance is exactly how it sounds... permanent (as long as the premiums are paid it is guaranteed to pay out at time of death.) Permanent life insurance has a part of it that grows Cash Value, almost like a long-term savings account, that you have access to as it grows through withdrawals or loans. Different types of permanent insurance allow the possibility of the cash value to grow faster than others.

How much life insurance do you actually need?

Do you have or hear the cookie cutter 10x your income?

The problem with saying 10x your income is it doesn't include everything else you need.

Childcare for your children.
Mortgage/rent payments.
Emergency savings.
Utilities.
Kid's college.
Retirement.
Etc.

what happens after the 10 years of income replacement is gone? ...maybe you need more than 10 years covered.

Do you own a business with a partner?

Do you have a funded Buy-Sell Agreement in place?

If something happened to your business partner, would you have the money available to purchase their portion of the business?

These are conversations that most business partners don't want to think about, but they are important to have.

A funded Buy-Sell Agreement using life insurance can provide the money needed to purchase a partner's share of the business if they pass away. It can help provide financial security for their family while also giving the remaining business owner the ability to keep the business moving forward.

You put a lot of time, money, and effort into building your business. Make sure you have a plan for what happens to it if something unexpected happens to you or your partner.

If you haven't had this conversation with your business partner, now is a good time to start.

Traditional Long-Term Care insurance is becoming a dying breed...

There are several reasons for that.

For starters, traditional Long-Term Care insurance premiums can increase over time, often as you get older and closer to the age when you're more likely to need the coverage. Many people find those increases difficult to keep up with, especially after paying into the policy for years.

Another challenge is the underwriting. Qualifying for traditional Long-Term Care insurance can be difficult, and many people either don't qualify or wait until it's too late to apply.

Then there's the claims process. When someone experiences a Long-Term Care event, getting benefits approved can sometimes be a lengthy and frustrating process for both the insured and their family. The last thing anyone wants during a stressful time is to fight through paperwork and delays.

That's why more people are looking at newer Long-Term Care solutions.

Many modern life insurance policies now offer Long-Term Care riders that allow you to access your death benefit while you're still living if you qualify for long-term care. These policies often come with guaranteed premiums that won't increase simply because you get older, and if you never need Long-Term Care, your family still receives the death benefit.

Long-Term Care planning isn't just about protecting your retirement savings, it's about protecting your family from the emotional, physical, and financial burden that can come with an unexpected health event.

If you've never explored your options, let's have a conversation. You may be surprised at how different today's solutions are from the traditional policies of the past.

Did you know you may be able to roll over one permanent life insurance policy into another?

I've been helping a couple of clients recently who had permanent life insurance policies that just weren't doing what they wanted them to do anymore. The policies had permanent coverage and built cash value, which is great, but that was really all they offered.

After reviewing their goals, we found policies that still provide lifelong coverage and build cash value, but also include living benefits that can help if you're diagnosed with a qualifying critical illness, terminal illness, or if you ever need long-term care.

Now, that doesn't mean everyone should replace their policy. Every situation is different. Sometimes keeping what you have is the best option. But you'll never know unless you actually sit down and review it.

That's why I always encourage people to meet with their insurance agent at least once a year. Life changes. Families grow. Kids move out. Retirement gets closer. Your insurance should be reviewed every now and then to make sure it's still doing what you need it to do.

If it's been a while since you've looked at your policies, I'd love to sit down with you and go through them. Maybe everything is exactly how it should be, or maybe there's a better option out there. Either way, you'll know exactly what you have and why you have it.
