🍁 A Little Fall Prep Can Prevent a Big Spring Surprise! ❄️
As the Vermont temperatures start dropping, it’s time to think about putting away those summer “toys” and getting seasonal properties ready for winter.
A few friendly reminders from Bessette Insurance Service, Inc.:
🚤 Boats & Watercraft
Drain water from engines and plumbing systems, winterize according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, remove valuables and electronics, and make sure your boat is properly covered and stored.
🏍️ Motorcycles, ATVs & Summer Vehicles
Top off or stabilize fuel as recommended, check fluids, protect the battery, inflate tires properly, and choose a dry, secure storage location.
🏡 Seasonal Homes & Camps
Shut off the water supply when appropriate, drain plumbing, winterize appliances and outdoor faucets, clean gutters, inspect the roof, and make sure windows and doors are securely closed.
🔥 Don’t Forget the Heat!
If your seasonal property will remain heated, be sure the heating system is serviced and consider a low-temperature alarm or monitoring system. A frozen pipe can create an awfully soggy welcome home.
🐭 And those tiny uninvited winter guests…
Check for gaps where mice and other critters might decide your camp looks like the perfect winter Airbnb. 😉
📸 One more tip: Take a few photos of your seasonal property and belongings before closing everything up for winter. They can be helpful if you ever need to document what you own.
And remember, putting something away for the season doesn’t necessarily mean you should cancel the insurance on it. Some losses can happen while your boat, motorcycle, ATV, camper or seasonal property is sitting unused.
